...and phpc.social is back from the reboot. Secondary queue workers needed a bit of extra nudging but are online now and queues have cleared, so y'all can return to your normally scheduled posting :)
phpc.social is now on Mastodon 4.2.9, released a little over 3 hours ago. We're also taking this opportunity to run OS updates, so will have a brief blip as the server reboots shortly.
Thanks to some sleuthing/fixing by @derickr (we were on a bugged ImageMagick version), if your phone was 500'ing on image uploads, that problem should be gone now on phpc.social. Please report 'em if you still see them! #mastoadmin
I now have IPv6 back on my GFiber connection, after a firmware update ~3 months ago borked things (v6 addresses were issued but failed to route).
The solution involved swapping hardware, so now my home network is running on WiFi 6E (for compatible devices) and as of tomorrow will include a 2.5GbE switch since the switch ports on the new (Actiontec) box are 1x10G 3x2.5G.
Once synced, the mesh points are rather impressive too, as they'll hit gigabit on the Ethernet side with WiFi backhaul.
Thanks to effectively tripping on a power cord, seems like my iMac's fan is now on the fritz. Fortunately I have other machines I can use, but not how I wanted to end my Sunday evening.
Oh hey, this flight has WiFi, as it's using the older Intelsat/WiFi Onboard gear, which didn't have a massive problem recently when launching, so while it's not as speedy as ViaSat it will actually work for most of this flight.
Now to resist the temptation to catch up on emails rather than doing the right thing and treating this like the redeye it is.
Thanks to borrowing an eSIM from @zonuexe, I've now tested all four physical Japanese mobile networks, including the elusive Rakuten Mobile. My phone didn't lock onto their #5G, but seeing #LTE on them was good enough.
That's in addition to LTE and 5G on SoftBank and NTT, plus LTE on KDDI, that I was able to source myself :)
Yep, I'm that much of a cell network nerd. Any questions?
Is there anyone in Kobe/Osaka/Tokyo who can hook me up with a Rakuten Mobile physical or eSIM? Probably impossible since I don't have a Japanese ID card, but would be cool to test all four mobile networks here.
Gonna run out of WiFi pretty quickly on N423DX, as (being less than a year old) it has ViaSat WiFi, and the ViaSat that was going to add Pacific coverage broke. Bought a flight pass For Science to see when things peter out.
#MastoAdmin PSA: Vultr cloud storage costs are now down to $6/TB/mo.
Backblaze B2 still has the edge on data transfer costs (they bundle data transfer up to 3x the storage amount) but IIRC bandwidth is pooled with cloud servers on Vultr anyway, so you probably won't pay for outbound anyway, and it's one less vendor in the stack to manage. Which is nice when you have better things to do than babysit various vendor accounts as part of running an instance :)
@ian I think I'd be curious if Vultr will let me use multiple CDNs for free like I can with Backblaze.
Currently Cloudflare and will move to Bunny probably at some point. But then I don't run this single user instance on Vultr since it's cheaper for me to run it on a smaller VPS provider.
Heading back ORD-AUS soon. Thanks to everyone who organized, sponsored, spoke at, or attended #phptek! It's great to see the in-person community growing again, including a bunch of new faces to the PHP conference scene, plus another bunch of folks who I haven't seen in awhile.
