If commercial cyberware became available, what organ/limb would you be willing to replace by a synthetic counterpart first?

Hi ,

is anyone using the keyboard shortcut to pause the automatic updates in the background on the current page?

I'm ready to cut this niche feature from Friendica but I'd prefer to ask users first.

The teacher profession has lately been hard in the US, and is going to be made even harder by LLMs. I reject the article's comparison with calculators, these are exact and you need to know what to ask before getting a useful answer from them. On the contrary LLMs satisfy neither of these propositions by accepting arbitrary prompts and outputting only plausible answers which might be useful or not.

I believe the introduction of accessible LLMs will further the divide between privileged students who will reap the benefits of homework vs the others who will use free LLM tools to skip homework, a cheap short-term win that will end up costing them in the long run.

So, what's the purpose of "login verification" processes where you have to give a code from a text message to a number you just entered after successfully signing in with the login credentials?

I had this experience with both Google and Microsoft accounts over the past couple of days, and so far the only purpose this step serves is to harvest phone numbers allegedly for security reasons.

I'm on the market for a new gaming laptop, I put money down for a listing on Newegg sold by a third-party company, but it ended being not available (even though the listing is still up).

Here are my requirements:

  • 4K display, 16"-17"
  • 32+ GB memory
  • 2+ TB SSD
  • Keypad included in keyboard
  • Budget: $2,800 - $3,200
  • No Amazon
  • Sold from the US

Can you #help me find a suitable offer? I've tried Newegg, B&H and Best Buy websites with disappointing results. Am I missing an obscure American electronics seller?

My current best choice is a tacky Mercedes-branded 16" MSI laptop which isn't ideal to me: newegg.com/p/N82E16834156540?I…

These days I'm running with the belief that when conservatives criticize something, they are actually doing it themselves. Kid grooming, brainwashing, censorship, orgies, all are fair game for them but obviously not for liberals.

So I was wondering what form would it take when they started criticizing liberals for allegedly forcing kids to transition. I knew they were resisting the transition of their own kids or trying to reverse it with cruel conversion therapies, but forcing the transition in the first place? Nothing came to me.

I must have poor imagination, because today I've been made aware of such a case in the limited context of the True Flames Universe Christian cult. Promising their members to reveal who their Christ-blessed soul mate is, it faced a number problem when most of its flock ended up comprised of women.

Undeterred, the couple who runs this cult came up with the Divine Masculine/Feminine concepts that they bestowed at will on select female members in order to force them to transition to male in order to pair up members more easily.

Belief confirmed.

It's hard for me to emphasize just how much #Windows 11 is just a nasty lead paint coat over Windows 10. Still, I'll present you this nugget for your consideration: behind every round corner Windows 11 contextual menu, there's your good old square corner Windows 10 contextual menu with more options.

It isn't hidden, there's a contextual menu entry just to bring up the old menu! 🤯

My partner offered to provide supplies for making bookmarks during my kid’s school non-denominational “Winter fest”. Another mom suggested a Christmas tree ornament making activity, to which my partner replied she didn’t have much to contribute to this activity, being Jewish. This detail was completely ignored as the same mom continued on the Christmas ornament plan.

White supremacy doesn’t only express itself in red states’ school boards, but also in less newsworthy ways on the fest committees of diverse schools in Brooklyn, NY.

hypolite, to ADHD

I had a pretty busy day yesterday Sunday, and yet at bed time around 11:30 PM I still was restless and played Cyberpunk 2077 for about 3 hours before finally hitting the sack.

These 3 hours are an #ADHD tax, and I’m going to pay for it in reduced energy until Wednesday, if and only if I don’t get restless again at bedtime for a couple nights, which may not happen, independently of my will.

I couldn’t have slept on time even if I had tried, I know it because it has happened to me before and I just ended up lying in bed, wide awake, with my brain still obsessing over something. In this case the best I can do is give in to my brain’s terrorism and do the thing I’m obsessing over before finally be ready for sleep a few hours later.

And it has nothing to do with my mood, I can be content like yesterday and still need this time for my brain to quiet down.

How does it work for you?

hypolite, to debian

On my fresh #Debian 12 server:

# cat /var/log/README
You are looking for the traditional text log files in /var/log, and they are
gone?

Here's an explanation on what's going on:

You are running a systemd-based OS where traditional syslog has been replaced
with the Journal. The journal stores the same (and more) information as classic
syslog. To make use of the journal and access the collected log data simply
invoke "journalctl", which will output the logs in the identical text-based
format the syslog files in /var/log used to be. For further details, please
refer to journalctl(1).

Alternatively, consider installing one of the traditional syslog
implementations available for your distribution, which will generate the
classic log files for you. Syslog implementations such as syslog-ng or rsyslog
may be installed side-by-side with the journal and will continue to function
the way they always did.

Thank you!

Further reading:
        man:journalctl(1)
        man:systemd-journald.service(8)
        man:journald.conf(5)

Thanks, I hate it.#systemd

Today I saw two videos of people sitting in the driver's seat of a Tesla vehicle with Autopilot engaged, while wearing the Apple Vision Pro goggles and gesturing in the air at what I assume must have been a spreadsheet, as they barrel down a highway.

And that's two videos too many. There has never been a version of me that would have been excited by this awful sight, and I used to be techno-optimist in my teenage years.

I’m part of a WhatsApp group chat for my daughter’s elementary school grade, and a parent started the “social media talk” about when to allow kids to join social media. Of course by “social media” they only mean Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, so I’ve been itching to reply about the #Fediverse. However I don’t have the shoulders broad enough to run a class-specific instance, which I believe would befall me if I bring up the subject and it gets any traction. 😕

Not thrilled that there’s no #NextCloud upgrade path between #PHP 7.4 and PHP 8.2 as I just changed #Devuan ’s major version.

This is because NextCloud refuses to upgrade more than one major version at a time, and on the upgrade path from PHP 7.4 to PHP 8.2, NextCloud version 25 supports neither of them.

Currently compiling a PHP 8.1 executable to hopefully run the version 25 upgrade console command before I move on to version 26 which supports PHP 8.2.

Phew 🥵

Diablo II (2000) is the first role-playing game I’ve known to give fighter classes the same amount of ”spells” as the caster classes by leveraging unique weapon skills and special movement techniques rather than purely magical spells or scrolls.

I definitely have mixed memories of table-top role playing game sessions where players with caster characters were frantically flipping through the extensive spell list of the Player Manual while players with fighter characters were recounting their dice over and over for lack of a better thing to do.

I just received my new laptop and if you were wondering how it is going with #Windows, I had to look up how to install Windows 11 without signing up with a Microsoft account (I have one, I just don’t want to use it) and download a third-party executable from GitHub to be able to move the taskbar to the right of my screen where it’s been for the past dozen of years or so. The Windows 11 taskbar doesn’t support this feature anymore, but the third-party tool is able to switch the taskbar to the Windows 10 version because of course it was still in there somewhere.

I also looked into moving my personal files from my old laptop to the new one and officially Microsoft only recommends using OneDrive (via a cloud upload and then download) or an external device (via a transfer to the device and then back from it).

No info on direct transfer on the same Wi-Fi network and I’m starting to understand why, sharing a folder from the old computer with open permissions makes it appear on the new computer’s network view but actual access is denied for vague permissions issues with no suggested resolution path.

I will not take questions at this point but I would appreciate some #help .

Disclaimer: All my written opinions are (un)educated guesses sources from scattered online opinion pieces and news articles I speed-read out of curiosity.

In the event I’m actually right about something, it’s more likely to be coincidental with my internal consistency than grounded in solid knowledge or understanding of the relevant topic(s).

However, I’ll always be able to write mostly convincing arguments à-la-Large Language Model because school trained me for eloquence rather than factual accuracy. Thanks for reading!

These past couple weeks, I've been regularly tired despite sleeping more than usual, been more sensitive to small setbacks (some of you have noticed on here), but more importantly lost the willingness to improve my current situation.

Several months ago I found my IRL social circle shrinking and I set out to expand it by joining a board game meetup weekly. It didn't pan out as I expected, there was a lot of gaming with was mostly nice, but no socialization opportunity at all. I recently considered the volunteering avenue, but this plan fizzled even before I started for a lack of want.

At this point I'm not sure what to do anymore since I'm pushing away the few people I still interact with and I can't seem to meet new ones even when I try. And this energy/sleep issue is concerning, I used to be able to get out of mental ruts by resuming a regular sleep schedule.

So, I flew 6 hours inland (1,200 miles, 1,931km) and I’m still in the same country. I was wondering in what other countries you can also do that, but my Internet search for “countries by biggest length” so far yielded more results about penises that I was ready to bargain for.

So far I have:

  • Russia
  • China
  • Chile
  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Canada (thx @fuat2mb )

Kazakhstan looks like a good candidate but I was not able to find definite information on its dimensions aside from its area which of no use to me.

I believe people on the are more likely to add alternative text to the images they post than on any other popular social media platform, that's great for . But it isn't the end-all-be-all of it. For example, when one of my contacts posts in German or Finnish or Farsi, I can copy the text and plug it in a translator to figure out what they meant.

However, when they share a picture including text in the same language, even if they transcribed the text in the picture in the alternative text attribute, I can't access it on mobile at all, and even on desktop I can't copy it from the default popup on mouse hover.

I tried to dabble with to reveal the alt-text attribute value using pseudo-content, but it doesn't work since we're dealing with an <img> which is an empty element by definition. Is there any other way to expose this attribute value other than just parse the text in the post body directly?

I played Jagged Alliance 2 (1999) about 20 years ago and while I remember it being somewhat of a tactical slog with sometimes indecisive firefights, I was able to get through about 75% of the game. This week I tried Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire (2005), a mod turned standalone expansion, and I ragequit during the second campaign mission (the airfield) because all 7 of my mercs were wounded by the time I eliminated just three guards.

I remember there was a fair bit of turtling, progressing slowly by crawling to the enemy positions, peppering them on the way, but this hasn't seemed to be effective in my new game, where my team regularly miss all of their shots while the enemies get a much better hit ratio despite carrying handguns and SMGs which have poor optimal range.

Of course, if my mercs get closer any faster than by crawling, they either get more chances to be successfully hit or uncover more enemies with more bullets coming their way.

Is there something I'm missing to be practically stuck at the second campaign mission?

it sounds like I'm stating the obvious here, but the way I see it, there are two opposites attitudes towards human life's general difficulty: Either it is meaningful, and overcoming it is a proof of personal worth, or it is meaningless, and as such it should be lowered for everybody.

I can't think of a third way but again this feels like a half-baked philosophical idea teenagers routinely come up with.
