If you're watching a film recorded in a language which you don't understand enough to follow the dialogue, what do you prefer to use to get a language that you do understand?
(I generally prefer dubbing, as I find subtitles require too much attention)
It just clicked in my brain. What I haven't been able to articulate about why I'm so anxious about #Windows Recall. I'm sure others have already gotten to where I am.
It's worse than "a system that tracks everything you do" and stores that info in a basic database that could be easily compromised.
It's worse than a nanny surveillance tool for companies to spy on their employees.
It's inescapable.
It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.
It won't matter if you're a master #security expert specialist. You can't account for EVERY other computer you've ever interacted with. If a family member looks up an old email with your personal data in it, your data is now at risk.
If THEIR system is compromised YOUR data is at risk.
I just went from "vague feeling of unease" to "actively writing templates to canvas elected officials, regulators, and attorneys general."
@droidboy@SomeGadgetGuy yeah I was being sarcastic (as indicatedby 'data is never stolen' it obviously is, aaaaall the damned time)... . Recall is a Total privacy and security nightmare.
'because #pregnancy is the result of "voluntary and consensual sexual intercourse," students should not be allowed time off to get abortions. If the students disobey and miss class for #abortion care, the filing continues, the professors should be allowed to flunk students. Additionally, Bonevac asserts that he has a right to refuse to employ a teaching assistant who has had an abortion, calling such women "criminals."'
@benroyce how the hell do these people even know what sort of medical care a student or employee is receiving or has received? As a lecturer all I need is a doctor's cert saying something along the lines of 'student unfit for work for two weeks'. Their medical care is their own business.
@alcinnz Gimp or Glimpse, Inkscape. Inkscape is massively underrated IMHO. I used to use it to vectorize drawings.
I've never really trusted 'third party' apps for things like organizing - I like to know where my stuff is exactly in the filesystem - but I'm about to try Darktable to manage images.
I should be using Emacs, but I find the learning curve too steep, so I use Obsidian - it's brilliant for capturing ideas, and I love that it stores my stuff in markdown in an accessible folder.
If there's one thing that is going to drive me away from Gnome, it's the crappy GTK file managers.
Thunar has some odd drag and drop bugs that bug me, and the way it focuses on the panes is very odd, so often I will think one pane is in focus when it's not.
Double commander is just a mess
Nautilus is broken on my install.
Nemo doesn't remember position. Same with pcmanfm.
I tried Krusader and it doesn't work great in Gnome. Neither does Dolphin.
If you signed the business record, and its wrong, it's your fault!
If you signed the business record, and its wrong, it's your fault!
If you signed the business record, doesn't matter if you wrote it;
if it's above your signature, it's your fault!
Why in god's name would you EVER work for, attend, or send your kids to a college that has put a sniper on its roof and aimed it at student protestors? Like that should be IT for that institution. I would not go within a hundred yards of that institution if it were the last university on earth.
@alcinnz@ajroach42 I sometimes listen to the local ABC radio, and I love how their sound people create audio landscapes. People will be doing an interview and there will be sounds of kids playing, or a river, or cars or something - this textured sense of location which is quite lovely.
my Debian install has a bunch of weird shite going on with sources and sudo and updates that I can't be bothered fixing. Might be time for something fresh. Maybe EndeavourOS - Arch-based sounds fun. Or maybe just Mint, boring but stable, get stuff done.
@unnameduser yeah there was a point where I'd happily troubleshoot for hours but now it's just annoying. Especially from Debian, which used to be rock solid. The whole linux ecosystem seems chaotic these days ... everyone needs to calm down and get the basics right.
@unnameduser Assuming it's not an issue at kernel level, I'm going to go either openSuse or Fedora - get away from Debian based distros. Or something Arch based, see how that goes. (I can't download too many to test as we're in a rural area and the internet is slow.)
