If there's one thing that is going to drive me away from Gnome, it's the crappy GTK file managers.

Thunar has some odd drag and drop bugs that bug me, and the way it focuses on the panes is very odd, so often I will think one pane is in focus when it's not.

Double commander is just a mess

Nautilus is broken on my install.

Nemo doesn't remember position. Same with pcmanfm.

I tried Krusader and it doesn't work great in Gnome. Neither does Dolphin.

I wish Spacefm wasn't abandoned.

@thelinuxcast terminal file managers aren't for everyone but I'm quite attached 'nnn'. Fast, simple, extended with plugins (scripts), file previews (even video previews now), it's also my neovim file picker. I've tried a few gui ones, they all mostly suck for me.

@angrylinus I like terminal file managers. Yazi is great. But I do a lot of drag and dropping and that means I have to go GUI

@thelinuxcast drag n drop for copying/moving files? if so it's fast n easy. There's a plugin that uses a pkg called dragon that creates a drag n drop gui draggable 'widget' of the file/folder so you can interact with gui stuff. Not for you maybe but just a fyi

@angrylinus I've used it before, it is janky af. And afaik, it doesn't work at all in wayland.

@thelinuxcast Best file manager I have ever used on GTK is elementary OS's "Files" Its simple, its powerful, if I want to do something trickier, its the CLI.

@thelinuxcast what do you mean with „Nautilus is broken on your install?“

thelinuxcast,
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

@dschier takes over a minute to load or change directories

dschier,
@dschier@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast this sounds weird, indeed. I assume there is nothing very helpful when running it with debug flags from the command line? Or any other meaningful logs?

The only thing that comes to my mind with this behavior is „thumbnail generating“.

thelinuxcast,
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

@dschier I haven't looked into it,tbh. I don't care for nautilus even when it is working. But having it as a backup may be nice. So I may troubleshoot it.

thelinuxcast,
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

@dschier I get this over and over:

While adding page: duplicate child name in GtkStack: Downloads

But for different directories and files. And Nautilus just freezes.

@thelinuxcast

This sounds a lot like an old issue related to „bad“ files in the „Templates“ folder.

thelinuxcast,
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

@dschier I saw that thread/bug report too. But I don't even have a Template directory.

thelinuxcast,
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

@dschier Creating one did speed Nautilus up. I do use an alternative home structure, so maybe because it doesn't see things where XDG Dirs thinks they should be. I have that file defined for the new locations, though, so IDK.

dschier,
@dschier@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast if nautilus really behaves this way, it seems like a bug to me. Yet, it is considered to be running in GNOME, so I don’t see this behavior fixed/adjusted soon.

@thelinuxcast sounds frustrating. any idea why Nautilus is broken? Maybe repairable?
