Rarely entirely serious. Fond of otters and dogs, scarily obsessive about music and old videogames. Boosts absolutely are endorsements; it's why I boosted them. He/him.

Last boost: I find taking notes by hand makes information stick much more readily than taking notes in a virtual document. But I wondered if that’s because I am Gen X and I took all my lecture notes at uni by hand. Maybe there’s more to it than that

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@purplepadma Nope, me too. If I'm working with a big document, I pretty much always print it out too, so I can scribble on it as I go. I just concentrate better with a pen in my hand.

I'm (just) GenX too.

    A small observation in light of the furore re kids and social media and so on.

    I think I’m part of the last generation to have grown up without access to the web (the first time I used it was at university), and I’m every bit as vain and distractable and miserable and anxious as any Gen Zer.

    @JoshuaACNewman @historyofpunkrock the depressing thing about this is that I’m old enough to remember when Morrissey was just a tedious arse who was far more pleased with himself than his actual talent would seem to warrant, rather than the cheerleader for the far right nationalists that he seems to be today.

    hedders,
    @hedders@mas.to avatar

    @JoshuaACNewman quite. I guess that slightly laughable superiority complex of his finally metastasised into full on white supremacism sometime in the 00s or 10s.

    Tell me you've never helped seniors with tech, without telling me you've never helped seniors with tech.

    And I don't just mean the person answering this question. I also mean whoever decided to remove this option.

    hedders,
    @hedders@mas.to avatar

    @tychotithonus I don't want to trivialise what is a fairly serious accessibility issue and a lack of regard for it bordering on ableism, but modern scrollbars (on all platforms) are just so bad. For the love of God can we please just have proper scrollbars back? It would solve so many problems.

    So, I bought one of those Lexmark "the toner cartridge is cheaper if you send the old one back to us to recycle" deals. They sent me the box to send it back in - it's huge. I could fit my dog and at least one of my children in it. Apparently I have to fill it before I send it back. I go through about 3 toner carts a year. This could ... this could take a while.

    A few things commercial lawyers say, and what they meant by them:

    "We seem to have one or two unmarked edits in this clause" --> "You're a crook."

    "I don't think we're very far apart on this, but I'm not sure what's on the page at the moment entirely reflects what we're aiming for" --> "You can't draft."

    "I wonder if we're over-complicating this?" --> "I'm on a fixed fee."

    Some of the effects coming out of the synth are too intense for the game.

    I'm thinking those ones will be just fine for Space Giraffe 2 though...

    Pleased with how nicely the synth player module has fit into the game. I can author presets on the big synth and bring them into the game really easily.

    This is turning into the excellent replacement for our old Neon engine that I hoped it would be.

    And it is nice to have (an early version of) one of the components of eventual SG2.

    The only reason not to demolish every bit of brutalist architecture we built in the post-war period is to serve as a reminder to never build any more of it. Because people will forget how awful it looks, and more importantly how cold and awful it is to live and work in.

    Would you rather speak every language on Earth fluently, or play every musical instrument on this Earth perfectly?

    hedders,

    @olimould This is difficult. Either would be wonderful. But music is really important to me and it's always frustrated me that I'm not much good at actually doing it, so I think I'd go with that one.

    So many of the toys and such that kids brought openly to school in my day would get a kid instantly expelled now. Hell, I must have carried a pocketknife from 7th grade onward. Somehow, we survived. Hell, a kid can get expelled now for pointing a finger at another kid in an ostensible "pistol" position. And some people wonder how the evil Right is able to leverage the term "woke" so effectively.

    hedders,
    @hedders@mas.to avatar

    @lauren This has reminded me that for a time when I was 10 or 11 or so, every boy in school walked around with a Swiss Army knife on their keychain or in their pocket; the fatter and the more spronglers attached to it the better. This would have been the late 80s. I'd completely forgotten about the Swiss Army knife craze until now.
