Rarely entirely serious. Fond of otters and dogs, scarily obsessive about music and old videogames. Boosts absolutely are endorsements; it's why I boosted them. He/him.

Chances of this being the worst purchase I make this year?!

(I've yet to move in my desk, monitor etc from the taxi, as I want to see what the temperature is like first...)

@neil OK, you win the "I got pissed and went on eBay" award for this week.

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@neil It might be lovely!

Or, y'know, it might be the sweatbox from hell in summer and a frigid mouldy nightmare in winter.

It'll probably be great for about a week and a half in April each year.

And now I want one.

"Jacob Rees-Mogg has suggested the Conservatives introduced voter ID to boost their election chances"

Disgusting.

@neil I mean, everyone already knows this, don't they? There is effectively zero voter fraud in the UK; it was always and only about making it harder to vote for people who are less likely to vote Tory. Why is anyone surprised by this?

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@neil I think everyone suspected it in the same way that everyone suspected those two Russian chaps weren't actually that interested in Salisbury cathedral.

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@neil perhaps, but this particular Tory escapade looked like a duck, walked like a duck, and on further inspection was found to have a wide bill, webbed feet and waterproof feathers, and to be swimming around on a pond going "quack, quack, quack"!

"Should social media face-altering filters be regulated?"

To what extent would existing regulation around models wearing make-up, or the use of flattering camera angles, apply here?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-65544054

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@mansr but it is often much more effective at preventing harm in circumstances where prevention requires people or businesses to change their behaviour when they don’t really want to. See drink driving, for example.

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@mansr I’d largely agree with that. Although for regulation to work probably only the proscribed behaviour needs to be defined. For it to be justifiable one should probably also be able to define the harm thus prevented though.

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@mansr oh yes, enforcement is a whole other question.

I’d say the case at hand is a poor example because regulating photo filters per se is self-evidently a silly idea and the article that Neil linked is a classic example of Betteridge’s Law of Headlines!

I've seen a bare handful of posts which are favourable about the coronation event. Far more have been (rightfully, IMHO) critical, with a focus on cost, and on the detention of protestors using dangerous new police powers.

I wonder how history will recall this event. The gilded pomp and circumstance in the face of food banks, unmaintained roads, and detention of critics?

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@neil I think it might be somewhat self-selecting in that Masto naturally tends to skew left and liberal. Conversely, there was and is an extraordinary level of flag-shaggery in evidence on our road, which is largely populated by affluent retirees who find out what to think from the Daily Telegraph.

I see the papers are all having a completely normal one, then.

    @neil I thought it was the PSTN they were switching off, not the physical copper running eg FTTC domestic Internet connections?

    hedders,
    @hedders@mas.to avatar

    @neil well that’s unhelpful of them!

    Going to attempt to harness the hive-mind of the Fediverse..... One of the kids has managed to jam a plug in the sink and noone can get it out. There's obviously zero room around it for purchase and overflowing it doesn't force it up. Anyone got any suggestions? Would super appreciate it!

    hedders,
    @hedders@mas.to avatar

    @TheBreadmonkey Can you get under the sink? You could disconnect the U bend and push it up from there.

    @neil Honestly? Google, basically by default. Bing's so bad Microsoft has to keep trying to trick people into using it, and DuckDuckGo, Qwant and so on are definitely getting there but for me just don't seem to return the results I'm looking for like Google does. I do keep checking them out periodically because I would ultimately like to switch away.

    My superpower is being able to read and understand things that someone else wrote.

    What superpower do you have that you are surprised more people don't?

    hedders,
    @hedders@mas.to avatar

    @DigitalStefan napping. I’m incredibly good at napping whenever the opportunity presents itself. I work in a world that can require some very long working hours, so my ability to nap more or less on demand has been my secret weapon in getting through that.

    I wonder if my dog’s GPS tracker will go off at 3pm? It’s got a SIM in it, so I suppose it’s conceivable. I’m going to have one very confused hound, if so.

    Not that we were planning on going anytime soon anyway, but Sandra and I were chatting about holidays and felt that the uncontrolled gun culture and rampant radical "Christianity" seeking to erase gay and trans people in the USA means America is off the list for now.

    We have had some lovely holidays there, and we would love to ride the Amtrak from coast to coast, but daily reports of mass shootings and vile policies don't make it attractive currently.

    (Edit: not just pro-gun policy.)

    hedders,
    @hedders@mas.to avatar

    @neil it’s worth remembering that the USA is absolutely enormous, on a scale that us Europeans find hard to comprehend, and that it’s very very very diverse. By all means steer clear of the likes of Oklahoma, Florida and some of the gnarlier bits of Texas, but most of it’s wonderful and almost everyone I’ve ever met there has been perfectly pleasant and decent and good.
