Meany #fashernistas have a troubling view of theory and practice. All good horizontalists understand that they come from practice. At the basis of this is #DIY that is working through practice to build theory.

To start from theory go ground and round and round then try and put this into practice, ends in a dizzy mess. When this mess is imposed as a solution, we obviously get more #techshit to compost or academic wank to clean up.

How to think about this in a useful social way? For just about everyone using any of these protocols they will have overlapping experiences, with bridges, the different protocols will be “invisible” to normal people. Currently, a lot of the mess is theoretical from a technical perspective, it’s made up mess to be different and new. And what is missing is that the different people’s experience is down to the applications more than the actual protocols.

The "culture" and assumptions behind these projects differ. #bluesky comes from Twitter, which has a history of surveillance capitalism, while #Nostr comes from the #Encryptionists and #bitcoin communities. #activertypub, on the other hand, is rooted in the #4opens traditions and the #openweb.

Bridges are good, we should piss on any new protocols that don't have at least one bridge to an existing protocol, and pissing is not just a metaphor, it helps to short out their servers.

It has now been 6 days after it has been noticed the official #Mastodon app suggests a single large instance by default, which just happens by run by same people who develop the app. This centralization is very concerning.

This change is VERY unpopular.

The GitHub issue (no. 1023) that suggests to revert this change now has 422 thumbs up and only 2 thumbs down.

Still NO OFFICIAL STATEMENT from the app developers. 😡

    I couldn’t be less interested in Bluesky - another Jack Dorsey experiment. As if we learned nothing from the past.

    But it’s also interesting to see how Mastodon‘s flaws are now used as an argument. No quote feature? Instances are hard to find? We need an entirely new platform with better UX. As if this was unfixable.

    It’s the restlessness of an industry that no longer seems to be able to overcome any form of discomfort and leaves at the slightest hint of hype for a new place.

    Towards the end of December 2019 I did a whole thread on Twitter, essentially reviewing the decade as ‘The Decade of Dishonest Technology’. It didn't start with that decade, and it hasn't stopped since, but it was the decade that got bought, and then sold everything about us under false pretenses, whether for state or corporate purposes.

    It was the decade of technology that wasn't only biased, but straight up lied to us. Lies that most of us didn't really care about, as long as they didn't hit our own wallet.

    The new #spreadmastodon project needs to balance the damage with the good it does with its outreach project.

    The wider #Fediverse relying heavily on a single platform, mastodon or instance https://mastodon.social, can have negative consequences. Leading to a concentration of power and influence in the hands of a few individuals and entities. This can result in issues such as censorship, lack of innovation, and a loss of privacy for users.

    @feb Concerns raised about the http://SpreadMastodon.org project are that it may promote insincere or ineffective activism, promote the agenda of NGOs over the needs of communities, and potentially lead to the co-optation or watering down of the values and principles of the #openweb culture. It is important for the project to balance the potential damage with the good it can do through its outreach efforts, and for the wider #Fediverse to avoid relying too heavily on a single platform or instance.
