Something I can say about getting older is that every day I realize I truly had no idea JUST how many of the decisions people in control of this world make are composed entirely of vibes.

@krisnelson there's some great research about the cognitive distortions in causal reasoning that extreme wealth creates 🫠

Hey umm

I can sing again!!!!!!!! 😭

First time in a year

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@philsherry yeah, I've had a very long battle to recover forceful sustained exhale specifically (exactly what you need to sing without gasping). The respiratory system is so complex!

@ferds it's been a really long year

🤦🏿‍♂️ the average American isn't worse than the average person in other countries in the world. That's not what's going on.

Our problem, is that all of our institutions are configured to allow the most racist, sexist, ignorant, and violent minority of us, to terrorize the rest of us without punishment or consequence.

The net result is a flow of our society away from what the vast majority of us want, and towards objectively horrible outcomes.

Like this.

@williampietri @mekkaokereke indifference is perhaps too neutral a word I think for a societal bracketing and perpetuating of this behavior, and imho that societal indifference is itself profoundly organized, from the POV of social science. Organized in the data we don't collect, in normative cowardice, and in all the structures that we bring down to prevent any change after violent acts. After my family survived a school shooting I saw this indifference organize itself at scale.

Being precise about very well understood uncertainty is not the same thing as imprecisely communicating something you actually have certainty about but don't understand you want to communicate. Aka why science writing is so hard and I'm really tired these days.

Next time you read a paper about the allegedly-magical capabilities of machine learning, it’s helpful to remember that pigeons can diagnose mammograms with 85% accuracy with sufficient training

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@mhoye @natematias love that you remember this and also love the pigeon index, no shade to pigeons, as all the vision neuroscientists in my life would remind me, they are the product of a lot more complex evolution than our silly little models :)

My continuing issue with relegating all concerns of developers-as-humans to "developer experience": I've seen what doing that for "user experience" failed to solve.

We deserve better tbh.

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

Take it from the researchers, do not confuse the relief of having a Defined Title in the Ladder with true strategic weight in decision making about your work and life. Accepting "the human stuff" as an add-on will mean it's ALWAYS already being cut.

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@josh yeah to me the whole "experience" framing in most businesses just translates to undefined notions like people vaguely feeling happier instead of actual sociocognitive mechanisms that create positive behaviors and problem solving and pathways

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@martinicat re: researchers I was mostly thinking of my fellow psych and cog sci phds who have contorted themselves into UXR roles and not actually gotten to drive true behavioral impact or decision making at their companies 🥲

Whenever I take a survey these days I spend as much time critiquing the design of the questions as I do answering them.

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@seldo this is the way

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@seldo me: "surveys are all so gosh darn broken"
Also me: "well if the only way you're ever going to let me ask about this incredibly important thing is a survey... guess I'm the survey queen now"

My latest with LeadDev on a topic near and dear to my heart: why building a learning culture is a science-backed key to supercharging your software teams' work AND has a career-long impact on the developers you manage.

Read on for best practices from our research:

  • Setting team level learning goals
  • Stop using stifling "identity" praise and use effort praise instead
  • Call out when developers apply previous learning across new projects

Observation about organizational agility: the video call and chat tools used by an organization correlate strongly with organizational agility.

  • Slack + Google Meet or Zoom: good agility and nimble processes 🕺
  • Microsoft Teams: limited agilty and sluggish processes 🐌
  • Webex or BlueJeans: ... 😶

This holds for maybe 9 in 10 cases in my experience since 2019. 🤷

#FastFlow #Agility

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewskelton I would dispute pretty heavily that slack usage unidirectionally signals nimble. I bet there's a massive drag for badly-operationalized slack culture inside of orgs that aren't handling remote well, because it creates digital presenteeism at scale :)

Fun testable research question!

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewskelton actually something I bet you would find very interesting that I learned doing efficacy research on educational tools: the great agility effects you see when tooling is NEW can reverse as organizations start to calcify and then use the tooling over time in less productive ways. This can be subtle to catch but explain a lot of conflicting impacts. I believe this happens all the time with collaborative knowledge management tools.

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@mostalive @JuttaEckstein @matthewskelton I never choose a specific tool explanation when I can choose a tool+environment+historical moment explanation ... Will check that out!!

I have thoughts about what we mean by "agility" having consulted with gov and nonprofits often written off as "plodding" but actually have many people using poor tools to do extraordinary things and just not interested in the same battles we might be interested in...

What stats do the cool kids do for repeated measures and pre post intervention testing these days

I'm drowning in a sea of time series correlation debates I don't have time for

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@schwinghamer "from each animal" I work with humans but indeed we are animals! No, many repeated measures over time with an intervention that also scales up over time (like increasing dosage)

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

I should've defined cool which == rigorous, kindly and practical OF COURSE :))

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@paulralph @schwinghamer @hye Rad - I was thinking mixed effects - although the estimation looks complex with lagged variables - this gives me a starting point to read more thank you!
