@enusbaum I went to check if I needed to update #Elasticsearch on my #Mastodon server and then realized that I don't have Elasticsearch on my server because I have 4GB of RAM on my server and Elasticsearch would die on my server.

@nebyoolae Yeah, it wouldn't even start when the VM only had 4GB -- I upgraded it to 8GB and now it's hovering around 5.86GB.

I'm thinking I might just disable it and uninstall Elasticsearch. I like the idea of federated search, but it also would cost me $30/mo more 🙄

We just got an email from Hulu that they're raising our price of our subscription to $89.99/mo.

At what point do we declare "cord cutting" a thing of the past? Hulu is now more expensive than cable/dish with fewer channels.

The bitch of it is, you can't get "Live" without their top tier bullshit package.

@nebyoolae Based on my research, just wanting a "Live TV" service (for cable news, etc.) the best choice is probably Sling TV's "Blue" package for $40/mo.

I feel like in 5-10 years we'll YEARN for the "good ole' days" of cable, and only having to manage one bill for your at-home entertainment.

  • You’re damaging your life and health.

Remember that a company’s job is to extract maximum work from you for minimum pay, so your job is to extract maximum pay for minimum work. Somewhere in the middle, both parties find an equilibrium that they agree on. Do not voluntarily modify your side of the bargain to your detriment.

I've had #AWStats running on my server for a few days, so I have those juicy analytics to look at now.

What have I concluded thus far? Bots.

The Internet is overwhelmingly just bots pinging anything alive, over and over. Some just indexing, some looking for vulnerabilities (no, bot, I don't have #wordpress installed...anymore).

It's kinda sadge 😢

@nebyoolae I proxy all my servers/sites through Cloudflare, which even on the Free tier has a "Bot Defender" mode which is pretty good at keeping automated traffic from reaching your origin.

Remember #AWStats? It's a bit eh to get set up on a server, but it still works! Just a Perl script that creates a web page with loads of helpful numbers, analyzed right out of your server logs.

I wanted to actually start tracking if anyone visits my websites, and so needed something quick and dirty. The "quick" was not super quick, but AWStats is full of "edit these config files" dirtiness for ya.

Started implementing Terminal.GUI into MBBSEmu to enable an Initial Setup Wizard. Pretty slick and easy to use!

Hopefully should make configuring the common options for Major BBS/Worldgroup a little more user friendly than manually editing a JSON file. #bbs #emulation #OpenSource

@nebyoolae You can use the library to add a terminal/text based UI to any C# console app.

I'm using the Wizard Functionality, but it has a pretty robust assortment of UI elements (Text Editors, Progress Bars, Modals, etc.).

@J_aa_p I can kinda see where Block doesn't make sense because if someone's account is public, and I am blocked, I can still read their content if I'm logged out.

So Mute + Block in DMs should accomplish the same thing while probably lowering code complexity. 🤷‍♂️

I did not get my namesake's .com domain back when I should've. I wasn't really thinking about securing my identity on the web in 2000 (when it was registered). A few years ago I got https://michaelchadwick.info, which is not as great.

It currently just shows a webhost default page, like it was recently moved and the site is being built, but it used to show some British actor's info.

Should I offer to buy it? How much would your namesake's .com domain be worth to you?

Continuing the finds from my mothers house, I found a Floppy Disk containing what I thought might be a DOS Text Based RPG I wrote when I was in Junior/High School.

After bringing the disk home with me, purchasing a USB Floppy Drive and recovering the files, HUZZAH! Vile 1.03b written in ASIC (BASIC clone) has been recovered and restored!

@nebyoolae It's basically an amalgam of several BBS games: MajorMUD, Tele-Arena, and L.O.R.D.

The end game is when you kill the top Wizard, you start over again with boosted stats... basically until you're a Level 1 demi-god 😂

@nebyoolae Many many years ago I was ride-or-die for Firefox, but eventually it was just hard to deny that Chome had way, WAY better development tools. And it just stuck.

I don't think there's any one feature at this point that would cause me to switch, so I'll just stick with what I know.

I started using The #Spotify AI DJ and am thoroughly impressed. Reminds me a TON of traditional terrestrial radio of the 90s/00s. Also their recommendations are much more informed compared to the Spotify "Radio" playlist feature.

@nebyoolae There's an AI DJ 😂 Not "whacky", but it'll do DJ breaks between songs and introduce what's coming up next or why it's going to be playing the next block.

"Coming up next, your top artist of last week" or "Here's a new music block we think you'll like based on your listening history" -- but it's in a total AI DJ voice.
