Generally confused and chronically tired muppet.
I disagree with the gender™

Your (sometimes not so) friendly Linux-sysadmin.

Does a probably unhealthy amount of computer touching, definitely owns way too many mechanical keyboards and loves tinkering with electronics and other tech stuffs.

Finally fully finished the DIY mini networking rack that I've been working on for the past ~4 months.

It's almost entirely made out of 3D printed parts, with the exception of the vertical rack rails and the side/top-panels.

For the vertical rails I used actual rack rails made out of steel, the side panels are laser cut polypropylene with metal mesh glued to the back.

The blue parts are printed out of CF-PETG, all the other panels are normal black PETG.

Photo showing the back side of the mini rack with some cables coming out of it.

@osfast PiHole itself can't do recursive name resolution, it always needs an upstream DNS for requests that aren't found in it's internal cache.

And since I don't want to use any external DNS like Google or Cloudflare I have my own with Unbound 😄

elmo,
@elmo@chaos.social avatar

@resmo Pihole does caching too.

And from all that I can tell from the documentation Blocky does not do actual recursive DNS at all.
It uses a list of external resolvers which it otherwise simply would not need.

The "custom DNS" feature of Blocky has nothing to do with recursive name resolution.

And as for the config:
I can export that as a single file in Pihole as well for backup purposes and just import it again in a new instance at any time, via the webinterface or pihole CLI tool

elmo,
@elmo@chaos.social avatar

@resmo I honestly don't see why?

Blocky can't do recursive DNS either and seems to have a lot less features than PiHole.
And it's a lot harder to configure and use since it is CLI config only and doesn't offer a proper webinterface.

I don't want to have to login to the Pi via SSH every time I want to change some whitelist entry or some other config.

There's zero reason for me to replace the perfectly fine working and easy to use PiHole with something like this.

elmo,
@elmo@chaos.social avatar

@resmo Yup exactly 😃
That's what I use Unbound for.

Might not have worded it correctly 😅

Wishing one last good night to #cccamp23.
Tomorrow it's unfortunately time to leave.

I had an absolute blast here and I already know that I'm going to miss this place as soon as I'm back home.

All the colorful lights, the overall atmosphere and most importantly the great people here just made this an absolutely awesome experience.

So long...

@elmo@chaos.social avatar

This new (released today) study on is really interesting!

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/feb/21/adhd-may-have-been-an-evolutionary-advantage-research-suggests

The researchers found that individuals with ADHD tend to be more explorative instead of just exploiting their known surroundings until depletion when searching for resources (like food).

In the study this resulted in people with ADHD getting more rewards (food) than people without it which could indicate that it might have actually been an evolutionary advantage when humans still had to search for food.

One of the takeaways of the study?

“ADHD can be a serious problem but it’s a problem in large measure because of today’s environments.”

Which isn't too surprising imho.

It's not people with ADHD that are a problem, it's the society that is run by sociopaths that prioritize exploitation over exploration and try to force that way of thinking onto everyone else around them.

Had this unbuilt keyboard prototype lying around for way over a year now.

Fully finished PCB with working firmware and everything.
Most of the parts for the case already 3D printed out just waiting for assembly (only thing missing is the switch backplate)...

I even got really nice looking color matching keycaps for it.

One of those projects I guess 😶
I should probably finish it...

Photo of a 3D printed ergonomic keyboard case without any internals. The case is printed out of a dark gray colored slightly silverish and translucent filament.

    The cars now have some kind of rear-projection screen in their rear windows and show ad or news on it when parked.
