kid: "yes, we trust you completely that the things we ask are within budget, and if we can't afford something you'll tell us, like you did with takeout. but I also want you to promise us that you're going to buy nice things for yourself too and not just for us" how are my kids so precious :pinkgirl_cry:

one of the weirdest things about cis people is that even when talking about another cis person, if the person has chosen a name for themself, the others refer to their government-name as "the real name". as if government is the force that brings the immanent into the phenomenal. any names not granted by the government are declared unreal: they're "pseudo"-nyms, "stage" names, the stuff of drama and dreams. government is thus granted the power of manifesting will into reality—and of dissolving reality into fiction.

Eliza used to be this neat little toy, I liked to play with her in my Eeepc, it was like a demonstration of how easy it is to project a mind on smoke and shadows, like finding faces on random wall stains...... to think we'd live in a world where grown adults fully believe elizas are sentient, with agency, can be programmed in natural language...

Late Night Show remains raw as fuck and drowning in realness and tragically underexposed for what it is, so I'm still sharing it

de cara que tem dialeto alemão que também chama isso de "penal"

elilla,
@elilla@transmom.love avatar

@slothrop yeah in Portuguese we had "pena" as in pen but with the demise of dip pens it has regressed to mean just bird feathers. but in one specific dialect near my area (only) the word "penal" is still current for the pen bag. I don't know of any that would extend that to the student, tho

elilla,

@slothrop "Federpennal" is kinda like "featherfeatherer"

the best thing about this test is that there's a whole thread on reddit of people clamouring for more regional words for the butt of the bread, that they missed. how many words for the butt of the bread can a language have, it's impressive

elilla,

(linguistic misconceptions voice) in German they have more than 50 words for the butt of the bread

my Krankenkasse app (SBK) suddenly started refusing to work on my LineageOS. now I have to register a new device, and to do so I need to travel to another city during work hours.

not only it's getting more and more impossible to have access to basic services without a smartphone, it's also getting harder and harder to use a de-googled phone, too. I don't even have Magisk or root in it, just the custom ROM is already rejected.

edit: managed to install magisk and a version of the modules to successfully bypass SafetyNet (basic), but the app still doesn't work.

elilla,

maybe I can reject modernity altogether and send my requests to the Krankenkasse by letter :thonking: Germans love letters, right? or fax

capitalists are like "sorry, home office isn't compatible with our company culture, you have to be at the office for productivity reasons. whoops your job is now done via Zoom by someone with a 12h-difference timezone and a tenth of your salary"

anyone recommends doctors to get an autism diagnosis as an adult (in Germany)? my friend has a very terrible relationship with their abusive parents and they're terrified that the therapists will insist on parent involvement

apparently Youtube barred a whole lot of people now for using adblockers.

I just want to point out that I continue to use Firefox with plain old uBlock and it works perfectly, no ads and no blocks on my side.

> I’d say the LLM spit absolute bullshit in about 60% of cases. I’d say my students—graduate students in computer science, intelligent adults with some knowledge of code—accurately assessed that the LLM was spitting absolute bullshit in about 70% of cases (with 30% slipping through). Multiply .60 and .30 together, and you get about a 1 in 5 chance of drek from a semi-knowledgable human augmented approach to AI-assisted code understanding.

we're going to be cleaning up very insidious errors left over from this crapfest for decades, aren't we. (assuming we still have electricity in decades.) NFTs and blockchains were nothing compared to this damage

elilla,
@elilla@transmom.love avatar

I'm reminded of Dijkstra rant against calling programmer errors "bugs" because it's a form of responsibility laundering. with LLMs you can now achieve massive, never-seen-before throughput of responsibility laundering per second

@hypolite the problem with accessibility is that LLMs are inherently unreliable; they by design and inevitably produce errors that seem correct and are hard to spot.

suppose a company fires their accessibility engineers cos now they can autogenerate imagine descriptions with ChatGPT. as is by now beyond question, a large fraction of these will look good enough but be in fact wrong or lacking. do you honestly think that they will invest the labour to proofread it all? it's not even clear if that labour is significantly cheaper than the ones they used the LLM to kill in the first place.

LLM accessibility is like electric cars: a distraction that lets capitalists increase their hold of capital and maintain business as usual while sounding like they're doing something that will prove to be a solution, any day now... at the cost of worsening the actual existing problem, immediately.
