At DjangoCon Europe 2024 I met Antonio Melé, author of "Django 5 by Example", for which I wrote the preface 📗

It was nice to meet Antonio and have a copy of his book (which I recommend to everyone) with his dedication ✍️

Bucket list item checked off: got to chat with @carlton and @wsvincent about Django! This one was a lot of fun, and I got to bloviate about the virtues of "batteries included" even though we recorded this a full month before the current zeitgeist.

Ep164: Buttondown with Justin Duke is live!

Justin is the founder of Buttondown, a newsletter service built with Django. We discuss scaling the code, and the team behind the project, the email space in general, new developments in web development, and Django features he’d like to see.

Hey friends. I am looking for both Massage Therapist and Physical Therapist recommendations in the East Bay, or specifically - I have some kind of impingement of my C6-C7 nerves (MRI acquired, specialist appointment upcoming). I have been in huge amounts of pain for 2+ weeks, not sleeping, tough to work, and I can't play with my kids. I'm expecting a long recovery so trying to get that started.

I have a longer rant about this that I will write up at some point, but here's the TL;DR: yes, you should attend conference talks, and please stop telling other attendees (especially those new to the community) to categorically skip them. Supporting conference speakers and the staff and volunteers that work to make the talks possible is a very cool decision.

The most frustrating part of the #PyConUS mask discussion to me is how it’s 100% focused on “your discomfort” vs “other ppl’s health”.

The MAJOR exclusionary nature of masks is inverted, tho! Of course are there ppl who don’t want to wear one for comfort or can’t for medical reasons. But the majority I talked to would be happy to wear one but wished if OTHERS didn’t wear one, so they could understand them (better, or at all). (1/4)

hynek,
@hynek@mastodon.social avatar

The question isn’t about “caring about people”, but “AT THE GIVEN LEVEL OF VENTILATION, is the DIFFERENCE between ‘only one side wearing a mask’ vs ‘everyone is wearing a mask’ BIG ENOUGH to exclude those negatively affected by masks?”.

That’s it. That’s the question. (3/4)

TIL how to use itertools.dropwhile() to get all lines from a file after a specific line. I always used to write my own loop to solve this problem.

I'm curious, have you heard of dropwhile()? Have you used it?

paarth,
@paarth@pirate.lgbt avatar

@AlSweigart @ehmatthes itertools and functools take the crown for each being parts of the #python standard library that are grossly underused. They solve so, so many common programming patterns in a way that is measurably more performant than other solutions.

You want to have a for loop within a for loop? You can use itertools.product instead!
You want memoization of a function/instance property? Just use functools.cache, or functools.cached_property respectively!

For various reasons, I've moved servers, and due to timing, am welcoming a number of new followers. This seems like an excellent time for a new #intro post.

Hello! I'm Kattni (she/her).

I am a maker, photographer, programmer, mentor, community builder and maintainer, intermittent chef, one-time gardener, and collector of excellent bags. I am #neurodivergent and #queer from many angles. I am tolerated by a cat who continues to let me live with her.

I am a content creator, creating approachable information, project builds, and tutorials. I am passionate about sharing what I learn and know with others who are interested, and this is my opportunity to do that full-time. Everything I find interesting is a potential topic, which means anything from history, to community, to tech, to programming, to photography, to biology, to office organisation, and onward. You can find me on Patreon and GitHub Sponsors. I am currently sharing all of my content on my blog, kattni.com. I am working to build a community around my content, so please consider joining me on my new adventure.

I am Conference Chair for PyOhio 2024. We're back in person for the first time since 2019. This is the first time I've done any kind of volunteering or conference organising of any kind, and it has been an adventure full of a ton of work. I am grateful to my amazing team, all of whom have made this situation possible for me. I will be Chair for 2025 as well, though I am hoping to spend next year spinning up my replacement for 2026.

I've done various speaking engagements, including being a 2019 keynote speaker at PyOhio, even though public speaking terrifies me. My most recent talks were at three summits at PyCon US 2024: the Education Summit, the Community Organisers' Summit, and the Documentation Summit. It was great to share things I was passionate about, but three talks at one event was entirely too much. I don't recommend it.

I left my job in September 2023 to pursue my passions. I spent the previous six years working with the CircuitPython project. I was an open source community leader, technical writer, new contributor coordinator, embedded software developer, CircuitPython library codebase manager, and embedded hardware designer, among other things.

There is definitely more to me than this, but I think this is a solid introduction to my current situation. Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you around the Fediverse!

You know what happens when you publicly shame someone for sharing covid test results? People stop sharing them. The test results don't change, just the ability of other people to learn that they may have been exposed and to test and take precautions themselves. Public shaming may make you feel superior, but it does nothing for harm reduction at best.

Waiting for boarding my flight out of Pittsburgh after and what a PyCon it was!

It flew by in a flash and if I weren’t so socially drained I wished it went at least twice as long. Always heart-breaking when one only gets a few sentences in with ppl one sees once per year. 💔

This year had much more energy than last year and the fact it sold out gives me hope for its future. See y’all in Prague!

The records you all broke at PyCon US:

  • of proposals in CFP

  • of registrations since pandemic

  • spike in new registrations (10%) so close to the conference that we had to lock it down
(I thought we'd be done breaking records at this point)
  • of toots using official hashtag during the conference @fedidevs (each day we broke our own record from the day before)

  • $ PyLadies auction proceeds

So grateful for everyone for the support and making history!! 🤩🤩🤩

  • $ of @pycon travel grants awarded by @ThePSF ($350K) might be a record too 🤔 Don't quote me yet, I'll have to check that first.
Record-breaking or not, it is impressive considering we received less sponsors and less sponsorships dollars this year.

Anyone know if Simon Willison's keynote will be generally available? I'd be interested in checking out a recording or transcript.

I've seen a few folks credit him for the phrase "imitation intelligence", which sounds to me like a concise way to note how Alan Turing's concept of AI as an imitation game has largely outlived its usefulness in the LLM age.

Magic tricks, e.g., have long fooled even people familiar with how sleight of hand works. But we don't say magicians do real magic.
