Two earthquakes in Newport Beach. M3.4 and M3.6. I received on-the-ground reports that it was "a bit disconcerting" and "sure as hell enough to get your attention".

Fourth earthquake in that area in the last few days. M1.6, M3.4, M3.6, M2.8.

Hmm, not sure on this swarm. Was docile in the tree, but did not like being gently swept into a box with wax.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Most swarms: "gentle sweep into box" -- "we're happy! Everyone move in! Yay!"

This one: "WTF YOU DOIN MAN! WE'RE GOING TO PING YOU IN THE HEAD! IF WE COULD GET THROUGH THAT HOOD WE'D STING YOU! GET OUTTA HERE YOU!"

(we'll reassess if they move into this box today or tomorrow... if they are friendly on a check, they get a bigger box. If they are not friendly, the queen gets squished and all the other bees will have to try to get adopted by one of our other hives)

Checked off "bought cheapest beer possible before 130pm and bicycled it home" on the bike tooter achivement list. (Edit: just for clarity, these are for my slugs, I do have a driver's license and no DUI arrest, I do own a car, and I don't drink beer.)

ps. Apparently "Old Milwaukee" is WAY cheaper, but it's completely sold out at that grocery store. And they have someone manning the extra door there, which is normally locked, but he'll ring you up and let you out the side door to save you the embarrassment of being seen by your neighbors buying very, very, very awful cheap beer before noon 😂

ai6yr, to H5N1
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Johns Hopkins Health Security Decoded, June 6, 2024:

"The 2022-2023 mass die off of South American elephant seals due to H5N1 occurred because the virus acquired nearly 20 mutations that allowed it to spread more efficiently among mammals and cause more severe disease, according to a preprint study. The research team’s combined ecological and phylogenetic data support the first evidence of multinational mammal-to-mammal transmission of H5N1 viruses ever observed. They also found evidence suggesting the virus jumped from sea mammals back into birds. The findings support concerns that H5N1 viruses are becoming more flexible and adapting to mammals."

Doggie hydration technique. Dog here was perpetually dehydrated, until we figured out he would drink if we filled up a 5 gallon bucket. But a big bucket is a lot of water and hard to keep clean. So we bought a bowl which fits in the bucket, which works too. Very important on these hot days.

NASA is developing a time zone for the moon

damn, I’m going to want a watch I can wear down here on earth that runs on LUNAR TIME

I’ll keep showing up fractionally late or fractionally early for events, then shrugging and apologizing while pointing to my watch: “sorry, lunar time, what are you gonna do“

ai6yr, to sustainability
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Big social media company trumpeting that augment reality helps sustainability... because consumers using AR are "increasing their purchases" of products.

(technology which increases consumption is not helping with sustainability, folks)

Some specific findings from the research include: AR experiences that positively impact sustainability increase consumer confidence in purchases, with 84% more likely to make a purchase, 71% less likely to ask for a refund and 69% willing to pay more.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

The logic behind this is, of course, is "well, we need consumers to buy more products... so we'll steer them towards buying LOTS of quote-unquote sustainable products". This is like the articles you see which are "here are all the things you should buy on sale on Earth Day!" 😢

  1. Republicans block a bill that would protect contraception

  2. Trump floats jailing his opponents; an informal advisor suggests executing them

  3. DataProgress poll: 63% of swing voters have heard little to nothing about Trump's guilty verdict

May I humbly suggest that Biden supporters use their feeds to put some of this info in front of people instead of continuing to complain/amplify stupid WSJ story …?

152 days to go. Lots of work to do. Gotta pick our battles wisely.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@shekinahcancook @GottaLaff I run into a lot of conservatives, due to one of my hobbies and my area, and the hard part is they don't want to look at what's going on and decide on a course of action; they are happy to just "follow the crowd" and "that's what I heard on TV"... which ends up being Fox News. They don't make a conscious decision on how to vote, they are goaded into their position by repeated pounding of those points into their head. If Fox News says: "well, women don't want to vote anyway" they either go "OH YEAH WOMEN SHOULDN'T VOTE" or "OH, OKAY, I GUESS I SHOULDN'T VOTE, I WILL BECOME A TRADWIFE"
