As we already have wildfires going in CA and are set to have scorcher weather Tues - Thu, let me remind folks that not only are N95 masks good for keeping from getting/giving COVID, but also good for filtering smoke from wildfires.

Good to have a supply on hand and to be wearing one.

aehdeschaine,
@aehdeschaine@zirk.us avatar

@msquebanh @meganL I wear them when gardening during heavy allergies or dry weather, when cleaning especially dusty or potentially mildewy things, etc etc. I love normalizing masks, especially in our current and near-future world

@ahimsa_pdx Yes, people don't always think of the cultural element of genocide. Cultural heritage destruction is not an uncommon effect in war, of course, but the deliberate acts here are something else. The utterly blatant advertising of it makes my skin crawl.

Finished my ballot to drop off tomorrow (VOTE BY MAIL IS THE BEST, at least as long as the US refuses to make voting easier across the board). My primary ballot is Democrat, but the packet they send includes all candidates. A number of Republican state lawmakers were disqualified from running again after walking out of too many sessions last year. It is truly disquieting how many of them are running for other (even higher) offices. November scares me for so many reasons.

@aehdeschaine@zirk.us avatar

In a related matter, there is a page in the packet giving tips on safety when you go to ballot drop-off sites. What a world of civic engagement.

the current US president really going all in on supporting the extermination in gaza during an election year really seems mystifying to me. as if deliberately trying to alienate his progressive base.

@kissane @hugo Wow, I love it when you clearly articulate something my brain has been tumbling around unsuccessfully. This is spot-on.

On this Mother's Day, I'd like to talk about raising the bar for fathers. Because the bar is set really low for us, guys.

To be a ‘good’ father, all you have to do is like, not beat your children, maybe take them to a ball game every other weekend, and hold down a job.

But to be a ‘good’ mother? You have to feed your kids healthy food, make sure their hair is cut and they're clean, get them new clothes as they rapidly grow, communicate with the school, bring them to after school activities, volunteer at said activities, make sure their homework is done, help them with personal problems, comfort them when they're upset, keep track of who they're friends with, make friends with the moms of their friends, all while making sure your home looks like no one lives in it. Oh yeah, and go to work, because according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 74% of mothers are also working.

She doesn't want flowers or jewelry, she wants you to pick up some of the crushing mountain of tasks and societal expectations!

@Cat_LeFey I think about the "mental load" all the time. I appreciate this post particularly because even the size of each paragraph illustrates the concept!

@MsHearthWitch @Cat_LeFey I really like your connection of it to hospitality. That gives me a lot to think about, thank you!

@Cat_LeFey @MsHearthWitch I'm not a heathen, but I have researched it as part of my ancestry practice, and I find the Havamal a really wonderful text to explore. There is a lot in there about hospitality and community and interpersonal relationships

Preparing for voluntary service at our #culturalHeritage centre & #museum. On Sundays, we have a table with women who do #handicrafts and chat. This is targeted #animation so that people become curious, ask questions and watch. And learn more about our centre. Most of the women #embroider, I show #VisibleMending. Other colleagues give guided tours, baked cake, serve in the cafeteria and explain hot #chocolate today. There is a lecture and a special exhibition about chocolate.

Apropos of nothing, this is a fine look at how to use ML tools* well in journalism:

https://www.zachseward.com/ai-news-thats-fit-to-print-sxsw-2024/

  • Some of the tools Zach talks about will be objectionable to some of us bc of their provenance or resource consumption, but a lot of them are just fine, and I think it's important to be able to make those distinctions.

@kissane I think it's interesting how many of the "good" uses are PART of the process, especially when used to search images or other large data sets for specific criteria. I've wondered for awhile how many genuine research applications of that variety are going to be lost because of the general pushback against the more egregious and/or extraneous uses of AI that are bombarding us more and more.
