ULEZ discussion.
Firstly, I sometimes feel that anyone who questions electric vehicles or things such as ULEZ zones is labelled as climate denier or even worse as a Tory. Neither of these things are true.
Edinburgh ULEz is my closest zone. I can see the befit for pedestrians from better air quality but wonder if there are better ways to produce the same outcome. My main concern is that ULEZ seems to punish people with older vehicles. Many do not have the money to purchase something newer 1/2

@IndyRichard Promoting/improving public transport has to be part of the picture - possibly right from the start. The village where we live is lucky in that it has a good local shop (though small) and a local GP surgery, but the nearest town is 17-18 miles away. There are still busses but they only run four times a day (six times on schooldays, but the extra two leave/arrive at around the same time) so using the bus means you’re out all morning or all afternoon before you can get back.

I’m trying to find a good 4-6 bay direct attached storage or NAS enclosure that will work well with Macs and not break the bank (trying not to spend more than £200-£300 if possible).

It’ll be to take the four disks out of a very venerable Mac Pro that is going to have to retire soon. It’ll just be running as a bunch of disks, since it’s for access to the data on those old ones, plus a bay or two for extra storage maybe.

Any recommendations?

@Wen Thank you - I’ve looked at some of the TerraMaster stuff and it did look like a possibility. I’ve seen some reviews that say there have been issues with some of their devices trashing disks, which I obviously don’t want to happen to existing disks with data already on there (although I do have backups). However, as is often the case, some of those problems could well have been user error rather than hardware faults, so it’s good to get a proper recommendation. 👍

@Stoat Thank you - I know that they’re already blocked on mastodon.scot (and I’m very glad) but I just wanted to wear a belt along with my braces!

I also get the feeling that the list someone posted was much more extensive and might have covered other domains that might also be used.

@Stoat Yep - I think you’ve nailed it. I managed to find that block list and it pretty much covers all Facebook domains. Or certainly a hefty selection of them. I’ll probably drop ‘em all into my own block list anyway - the “nuke the site from orbit” approach! 😆

@vagina_museum While that may be true for “cis” in the context of gender, “cis” and “trans” already existed as scientific terms in English long before 1994, being commonly used in organic chemistry (for example). I don’t know whether this, or other scientific usage(s) of cis and trans, inspired the use of cis in terms of gender.

(Sorry, yes, I’m a bit of a language/origins of words pedant…)

@dimi @linguistics @jantzen Don’t know about a Torpenhow Hill, but - as various online sources will attest - there is a place called Torpenhow in Cumbria.

Its pronunciation is an excellent test of one’s Cumbrian roots or local knowledge…
