iPad has probably had the most dramatic shift of all of Apple's platforms, since its inception. It began as doing very few things to a very high quality, but now it does almost everything, badly. I hope history finds it to have been more than just an incubator for Apple's Mac silicon during the wayward years

adacosta,
@adacosta@twit.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I disagree, it’s still great for watching videos in bed, listen to music, light and easy to carry around. Great for casual web browsing and email. Also, if I need a little more screen real estate from my MacBook Pro, sidecar is an excellent extended display feature. It’s just when you try to use it as a Mac replacement it comes up short. needs to add a Mac optimized mode: window management, multi-tasking in context.

When Apple hits M5 I plan to replace my Windows laptop with either a Mini or Studio. There just isn't anything sticky in Windows for me anymore.

You can't let a product like Vision Pro stumble out of the gate half-finished with no launch event, no developer support and no meaningful updates or new content in 3 months. Virtually nobody even got a dev kit. There's little to no App Store discoverability, so apps that are there don't get surfaced, which means they make no money to justify future investment in the platform.

Apple has got so complacent that it's forgotten what it takes to fight for a new product category

adacosta,
@adacosta@twit.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Vision OS 2 and the next version of Vision Pro will prove how committed they are to this. Right now, I think it’s learning from what’s out there and hopefully aiming to get things right at the 6 and 9 o’clock analogy that Steve Jobs used for Mac OS 10.0 and 10.1 back in 2001. We have to accept though Apple is no longer the underdog anymore.

adacosta,
@adacosta@twit.social avatar

@matadan @stroughtonsmith I noticed many are using the 'dev kit' description a lot. Is that just a personal opinion or is there literature Apples web site you can point to? So far, I have not seen any indication that is the case. The descriptions and demos from its a replacement for your home entertainment system not mention examples were dad taking spatial video of kids, face time chat, watching movies, playing games. How is that a dev kit?

On Windows, I prefer the skeuomorphic icons, on Mac I like the detail and UI gestures, Linux I like that it’s free and does 99% of the things we buy a Mac or Windows device for.

@thurrott Its what we have deployed on all PC's at work, but never thought too much of it. I remember back in like 2007, to get access to Enterprise was seen as some holy grail. I have a bunch of saved keys which includes a lot of Enterprise keys. I should upgrade Pro installs to it just for fun.

To be honest though, I don't see any night and day benefits. Its not like a going from FAT32 to NTFS, or a true 32 bit operating system with memory management, pre-emptive multi-tasking.

@thurrott I am still super happy with my M1 MBP 13 I bought in 2020. Still super fast and does all I need. I can't justify getting another Mac now. But I still have a Windows laptop hooked up to three displays. My plan is once Apple reaches M5 I will use my delayed gratification and swap it out with a Mac Studio. I plan on getting one of these Air's for my sibling to replace his 2017 Intel MBP.

The issue here is, on which iPadOS is based is significantly holding back the devices full potential and it seems intentional at this point.

@thurrott I noticed there is a sudden exodus of veterans from these large tech companies. I feel like it boils down to boredom and mature platforms with so much resolved and so many solutions available through apps, third party hardware that work with them. The need to innovate is becoming less.
