ZoDoneRightNow, to kbin

Can someone please recommend a relatively small (less than 200 users) #kbin instance. It needs to be queer and neurodivergent friendly, preferably socialist.

Is your child using "GNU/Linux"? "GNU/Linux" is a computer program often used by hackers. "GNU/Linux" has publicly available source code, which is highly illegal. If you find "GNU/Linux" on your child's computer, they may be commiting cyberterrrorism against the United States of America. It is your responsibility as a parent to prevent your child from engaging in such illegal activities, as you will be held accountable for letting them happen.

ZoDoneRightNow,

@mjdxp What is this in reference to?

ZoDoneRightNow, to random

Hey #calckey #fediadmin
How much storage should I expect a 1 month old 8 user instance to use? Kinda shocked at how fast we have gone through 150gb

ZoDoneRightNow,

@kainoa I haven't heard of a media bucket, what is that? I have turned off media caching, thank you

Dear North Americans,

Please stop using seasons when referring to release dates etc.

Kind regards,
The southern hemisphere.

ZoDoneRightNow,

@snott @brodie every time I see eastern time I have to work out which eastern time zone they are talking about. Is it Australian Eastern, is it Eastern European, is it North America, is it Indonesia?

Cue quarterly #Haskell community meltdown

To be fair, I think Haskell will continue to fill the niche it filled ~10 years ago, around the time it started to get mainstream hype. Small teams of skilled devs delivering robust products that would normally require much larger teams to maintain will continue to prevail. Purely functional lazy programming was never bound for world domination in an economy which is antagnostic to curiosity, creativity and truths.

On the other hand, I have the feeling that we're going to see more and more Haskellers-turned-Rustaceans come to realize that #Rust does little to alleviate the primary barrier to Haskell's wider success -- fast and predictable turnaround time for projects developing cutting-edge technologies -- and will wind up going the same route as some major Haskell projects such as #Unison and #Idris have in recent years, which is to try #Chez Scheme, only to discover that it allows them to release blazing fast functional programs on a generic foundation where major breaking changes are practically non-existent, providing incredible flexibility while significantly reducing dependencies by dint of the ad-hoc tooling that falls out of the bottom of #scheme. Not to mention the joys that come from near-instant startup times, some of the fastest compile time you've ever encountered, fully-customizable interactive development and a surgical #debugger that rivals Haskell in scheer fun. Yesterdays naysayers will become tomorrow's enthusiastic bootstrappers. Or a at least a boy can dream.

That said, in all seriousness I don't think Scheme will ever reach the heights of Haskell's moderate commercial success. But I do think that projects built on Scheme, like Unison, will get a leg up and eventually surpass it, and interest in #lisp will only grow.

ZoDoneRightNow,

@rml I have been learning clojure in my spare time along with common lisp and haskell. So far I am liking clojure the best because of its use of the jvm. I am thinking of learning Kotlin too for android development but worry that an over focus on jvm languages will be a detriment, idk. I have fallen in love with the way functional languages operate and am now struggling to think in an object oriented mindset for uni.

Apparently, there are people who are happy that they won’t be able to install optional third party stores on iOS because they don’t live in the EU.

Like, why?! “Oh I’m sure glad this option to get more apps that Apple might have not allowed doesn’t come to MY phone!”

ZoDoneRightNow,

@thelinuxEXP I believe most people in that camp think that it would mean that the apps they like would require a third-party app store. They like the idea of having everything in one place.

louis, to fediverse
@louis@emacs.ch avatar

I disagree with the current CEO of Mastodon about his stance on mid-sized instances. We don't want to be run in isolation, we are part of the Fediverse. "Normal users just want the default", he can repeat that as many times as he wants, it doesn't make it true because of that.

Diversity is the DNA of the Fediverse and Mastodon is just one part of the whole. Thousands of people spend their time and money to make it successful. Anyone who dismisses that and single-handedly tries to market the Fediverse as a Mastodon brand and use "crowding out" techniques to prevent users from even being encouraged to choose an instance from a diversity will ultimately fail.

I am super disappointed with the direction Mastodon Corporation is taking. If there is not enough headwind here soon, then sooner or later it will lead to a schism.

ZoDoneRightNow,

@marius851000 @rysiek calckey supports moving your posts from your old account the same way (on the user end) that you copy over follow lists or block lists on mastodon

ZoDoneRightNow,

@rysiek @marius851000 I haven't tested it myself yet as I found out about it today but I will be testing it over the weekend. I would assume it would only copy over posts as replies sound like a hard thing to implement but idk. Ill let you know after I do my own testing

Graphs of the sizes of fediverse instances, how common they are, and where the most people are! 🧵

Data pulled from https://instances.social/ (by @TheKinrar) and excludes pawoo and baraag as they're heavily blocked for good reasons (it seems)

Breaking down instances by the number of users into bins (that are quasi human friendly logarithmic), we see that the majority (55%) have 2-50 users, ~33% have 1 user, and almost all instances have less than 5,000 users.

ZoDoneRightNow,

@maegul @fediversenews Does the Pareto principle apply here? are 20% of instances home to 80% of users?

ChatGPT is great for getting example code to do something with an unfamiliar library or API. Highly recommended!

ZoDoneRightNow,

@evan phind works better for that, cites sources and is always up to date. I still worry about how ethical it is but at least it is better than ChatGPT

A Friendly PSA:
Feel free to ignore but...

Calckey is a diverse community with users from
all over the world which is so very cool, isn't it?

Thinking of our international friends,
let's consider being cool and using CWs for USPol news.

I know I don't wanna be bombarded with our
fucked up politics and DJT's face every time I pop onto Calckey and I'm sure some of our international friends feel the same.

Here, a cool song for all of us around the world 🌍

ZoDoneRightNow,

@MariaTheMartian I do try to keep up with US politics but have been quite annoyed that they haven’t been being tagged with USPol lately (it was always tagged when I first joined). I appreciate the PSA c:

#calckey is there a way to change how much of a post is shown by default (so that I don't have to click show more on so many posts)?

ZoDoneRightNow,

@ada @RiversideBryan Is the branch public?

ZoDoneRightNow,

@ada Hey, I switched my instance over to hajkey but I still can't see the additional settings options that I see on blahaj.zone
Is there something I have to enable somewhere to get those options?

@ada I got it working now, was using the wrong branch

supakaity, to random

So some of you might have noticed that I have been quiet for a bit and have been wondering what I have been up to.

Well, this is my current labour of love:
https://codeberg.org/supakaity/hajkey/src/branch/blahaj-zone/packages/backend/src/server/api/endpoints/notes/threads.ts

What is it you ask?

Well Calckey currently has a bunch of timelines and lists and channels and antenna.

They all live their as separate APIs and have quite a bit of code duplication. And they also cause a lot of post duplication and messy timelines with things you've already seen appearing multiple times.

So what am I doing? Well the first thing I want to do is to build a single timeline endpoint that's configurable in weird and wacky ways... Like a timeline with my "Calckey" and "Blåhaj" antennas, plus my "friends" list, plus the "ask the admins" channel, plus my followees, plus anything from local.

This new endpoint also has anti-duplication built-in so you'll never see the same post boosted multiple times in the same feed.

I'm hoping we can replace a large portion of the existing timeline endpoints, as well as allow our users to produce some custom timelines for themselves.

After that, I'm building a new thread view (yes, I know the Calckey team are currently overhauling this too, but I have wanted to do this for a while, and I think my way will be interesting and efficient, I guess we'll see). This new view will be kinda like a love child between Facebook and Reddit if you can imagine inline thread expansion without reloading the page. You start seeing the thread bit around where you entered and the general outline of the thread in other parts, then can fill in bits of the threads you're interested in by expanding into them. I dunno I am probably doing a really poor job of explaining.

Anyhow, that's the development update from your friendly sysadmin gal.

ZoDoneRightNow,

@supakaity We are runnning hajkey on our instance and I am loving it so far. I am excited for the planned features and if I ever get any spare time (unlikely), I may start contributing and make my own branch.
