    My short stint in management has made me a lot more critical of bad management.

    If everything is a dumpster fire all the time for all employees? Bad management.

    No clear employee development path and needed skills?
    Bad Management.

    Can't accurately describe time and effort needed for your people to accomplish a task without overtime?
    Bad Management.

    Yeah sure if you are doing something complicated or new or scary .... but that usually isn't the case.

    Management usually is just too focused trying to please upwards and not trying to actually do a good job.

    If you don't lie to yourself and others I don't see how you survive in the world I grew up in....

    Where everything was "you didn't see nothing" and "conform or... often quite literally... die".

    How would you be able to support a church like the southern Baptist church without lying?

    How do you pretend the local cops aren't thugs without lying?

    How do you make appearances the most important social aspect without lying?

    How do you demonize premarraige sex while covering up sex abuse of community leaders without lying?

    When I think about it I'm not shocked lying is such a key component of mainstream TV. I'm just shocked I didn't notice sooner.

    This is what is so radical to me about shows like Strange New Worlds or so many of the new cartoons is the basic idea of open honesty and support and active use of emotional skills without "everybody does it" blurring of what is bad and what is good.

    Shows who find their drama not from people hiding things but from people having to put in the work to truly support their found family.

    For some reason, I'm really missing Tokyo today. I loved how liveable and big life could be there. The way the streets could be both crowded and lonely when melancholy. How the density of places made it feel like you could discover something surprising and magical when you turned the next corner, like one of Murakami's novels.

    なんとなく、東京について懐かしいと感じている。あそこに生活しやすくて、広い人生ができた。道は込んでいても一人でいる切ないな気持ちもあった。よく、村上氏の物語のように、びっくりして魔法らしい事が角を曲がるばかりの所にあるとよく感じられる。

    I’m getting one email after another from students with cold symptoms telling me they won’t be in class—I finally sent out an announcement to my classes reminding them that they will never be penalized for missing class and that even if they think it’s allergies, to please stay home. I said that although we live in a culture that tells them to still work and go to school sick, this is NOT RIGHT and they are allowed to practice self care…

    So...the reason Star Trek holodecks just have games where you play as Sherlock or a film noir detective and no new ideas past the 20th century.... it's because we developed ChatGPT right? Like, everyone just asks the computer to remix stories others wrote centuries ago over and over again rather than write anything new or reward those that do create something new, right?

    I know Star Trek taken uncritically is supposed to be an optimistic future, but like, there are some weird dystopian elements in there that feel like they are only starting to come fully into view 😬
