Went on a Melbourne Dumpling Discovery Walking Tour last night. Four very different eateries, four very different dumpling presentations. Our guide, Monique, was organised, cheerful and knowledgeable. Thoroughly enjoyable, would recommend., a great way to wander around the world's oldest continuous Chinatown precinct.

Law No. 2 of home maintenance/repairs: the tool you need for the job right now isn't in your toolbox. You lent it to Dave four years ago and he hasn't given it back.

One of the most satisfying feelings of all time is when you walk in somewhere, they see you and they say, 'The usual?'

Aurealis 169 is here, our April edition. With Stephen Higgins steering the ship, our top notch fiction features the creepy but poignant ‘The Boy and the Girl and the Friend Who Watched Them’ by Charlie Milne, the time-crossing ‘The Divide’ by Daniel Burnbridge and the lyrical, fragile ‘Finding the Words’ by Avril Mulligan. And strap in for some absorbing non-fiction: ‘The Afterlife in Speculative Fiction: A Memoir (Sort of)’ by Claire Fitzpatrick, ‘A Bertram Chandler: Australia’s Greatest SF Export’ by Steve Davidson and ‘The Science Fiction Manifesto by Declan Ellis. Our superb internal art comes from Leah Clementson, Emma Weakley and Zuzanna Kwiecien. And don’t forget our jam-packed Reviews section for titles to add to your TBR list!
Aurealis, think differently.

Tarzan, marzipan - don't get confused. You don't want wait to be rescued from a crocodile infested river by an almond based confectionary.

It's Twelfth Night tonight, the traditional time to take down those Christmas decorations. And to wear yellow, cross-gartered stockings?

Every male writer has an important decision to make: tweed jacket, leather elbow patches and pipe or black t-shirt in author photo?

Hands up if you've ever gone to see a movie by yourself.

Many years ago I went to see Blade Runner and Conan the Barbarian by myself on their opening day. So good.

I hate it when companies do this. Of course this is My Telstra; it's my bloody phone! Stop prefixing all my mobile app names with "My" and making it hard to find them in the alphabetical list!

I love good CGI in movies, but I keep going back to the joys of BGI (Brain Generated Imagery), that wonderful, active, immersive experience you get from books.

Sure, the movie is sad when Frodo joins Bilbo and Gandalf in leaving Middle Earth, but it's nothing compared to reading the appendices to LoTR when, one by one, each member of the Fellowship dies or leaves the world, one heart-rending sadness after another.

Feelings are complicated, and as a writer one of the constant challenges is to describe them in words so that a reader can say to themselves, 'I know that feeling' or 'I've seen someone feeling like that' or at the very least 'Oh, I can imagine that.'
It's a fundamental way to create a sense of engagement with a text, and it's one of most common tests a writer faces in this wonderful, maddening, exhilarating craft of ours.
