Welp, I made it to A Coruña for the CSS WG FTF this week, but my international-plan Verizon phone, which worked fine this morning, became a brick as soon as I left Madrid. Can’t send or receive texts, make or receive calls, wifi only. If anyone calls me, they get Spanish voicemail. And I can‘t log into Verizon to try to fix it because their login depends on SMS 2FA. Both their Support and Contact pages just say “we can’t do that, visit our web site” WHICH I WAS ALREADY ON GAAAHHHH

I just had an idea for a neat thing Apple could do.

Y’know the little tabs that pop up when you select text in iOS?

It’d be cool if the device learned which actions you tend to choose in a given situation.

So, if you choose “Translate” more often than, say, “Format,” they could make that a little easier for you.

This is an idea that I just had.

I was doing some research and discovered that the estimated number of internet users, which we can fairly reasonably equate to web users, is essentially the same as the entire global population aged 15–64.

Looks like YouTube did something in the last hour or two to prevent video playback when uBlock Origin is enabled. I get playback errors with it on, no problems with it off.

Every so often I drop into Facebook (family contacts keep me there) and my timeline is infested with obnoxious right-wing groups, sexist joke accounts, anatomically impossible anime girl art, and praise for Lena Scissorhands (???). Apparently blocking profiles is interpreted as positive interaction, since the more of these I block, the more I seem to get.

Great work, Zuckers, you’re doing one hell of a job there.

Been seeing a rising tide of vitriol over upcoming voting in the US and UK, and I really think it’s almost entirely rooted in whether you see your vote as an affirmative statement of your values, or as a pragmatic political choice. Both views are understandable (to me, anyway) but they can’t ever agree on where those views lead them, and it results in a lot of sniping condescension and outright disgust between ostensible allies. I guess that’s first-past-the-post for you.
