Do you collect books by a specific author? Stephen King is one such author for me & I can’t even remember what prompted me to start collecting his, but I do. #books #fiction #fediverse #photography

I saw a quote that read, “Thankful November.” Every month seems to have some specific theme, or something we should be focusing our attention on. These frustrate me. I want to be thankful every day, not just extra thankful because it’s that time of year. I know the point of these month labels is to get you thinking, but I think a lot & there will always be certain things that I strive to be or do, whether I am advised by a calendar to do so or not. #fediverse #photography #life

*PSA: Stop smoking.

The dr I work along side w/ tells people this every day: Smoking makes everything grow older quicker. You will get diseases often associated with old age, way earlier. You may know that heart attacks, strokes, & cancers are linked - but if those don’t kill you first, you will go blind, & if you aren’t completely blind, the exacerbated ( by the smoking) age-related macular degeneration (that you may have) will require injections into your eye every few weeks to try to maintain the central vision that remains. Smoking is nasty no matter how you look at it. And-adding insult to injury, smoking is expensive. So don’t try to quit as my dr says, just quit. There is no excuse to continue this habit.

  • This rant is due to a house guest, who is 45, (so she has grown up in a time that most definitely was taught better) & smokes a carton per week. 🤮🚬

There’s much to be said when someone puts their whole self into doing something well-so much so that it compromises other areas of their life. While it’s a sacrifice for them, it’s who you want in your corner when you need someone to fight & find answers for you. If you enjoy true crime, look this one up. #books #nonfiction #photography

I lost my mom eleven years ago today.

My mom had been sick for a long time, but in January of 2012 they told her she had less than a year left. She hung on until March of 2013 to prove them wrong.

Hell, at twenty, he’d been ready to junk everything and start over too. But now, at sixty, he was less willing to throw things away that could be patched together and kept running for a few more months. He wanted to keep going forward, not stop and turn around and analyze the validity of decisions made and courses charted long ago.

Does anyone else have trouble doing one thing at a time? Like if I'm doing chores it helps to have a podcast or talk to someone, or watching TV, I need to do something with my hands, like a little handy craft, or a simple game. I love movies, but the movie has to be absolutely fascinating for me to want to go to a theater where I just need to sit there and watch. I have a large amount of tabs open on my phone all the time and I flit back and forth through a bunch of different things. Weed helps calm this down a bit.

@RickiTarr I think with something like chores, it’s nice when you can engage your mind (podcast, music, audiobook, etc), but regarding TV/movies, like you, I like to have something that I’m doing alongside it because they just aren’t good enough(99% of the time) to justify just staring at a screen.

An Un-Anniversary Celebration
Memories – from 2014 – a fun throwback story if you want to read on… We are in Quebec city, having a great couple of days on our way home from a bit of a tour around friends and family in Ontario and Quebec. Last night we found a little restaurant, the Café de Paris, (read the tale here...

Short Stories.

Love ‘em, hate ‘em, somewhere in the middle?

Years ago one of my dear friends (who is a huge bookworm) and I were talking. She told me she hated short stories. I can’t remember why or if she even told me a reason. This conversation has stuck with me, because I struggle with them- why? I have no idea. I have tried different tactics to overcome this. I am s l o w l y reading one now, but I don’t gravitate toward it (not the one pictured, but it’s one I really want to read if I can ever get there).

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

@kimlockhartga I was hoping you’d chime in, because I know you enjoy short stories. Interesting thoughts about reading short stories done well vs. the latter, about “getting to the good one.” Several yrs ago my old book club chose the short story collection, A Good Man is Hard to Find, by Flannery O’Connor. This wasn’t the collection of her stories in its entirety, but just a few. To me, AGMIHTF was the standout. However, because I know she is a great writer, when I came across a collection in its entirety, I bought it—because it may need another go, or maybe there are more stories I will enjoy in that. I’m rambling, but that’s my take, I guess. Maybe I’m a snob and will be too critical of short stories, I don’t know. PS. I like beets, but rarely eat them. Meatloaf is a hard pass because I don’t understand the point of it. I know it can be mixed with different ingredients, but the bottom line, is that it was a loaf of sorts in the package from the store, then you cook it as a loaf. Just seems like zero ingenuity, why mix it with stuff just to turn it back into a loaf??
