Short Stories.

Love ‘em, hate ‘em, somewhere in the middle?

Years ago one of my dear friends (who is a huge bookworm) and I were talking. She told me she hated short stories. I can’t remember why or if she even told me a reason. This conversation has stuck with me, because I struggle with them- why? I have no idea. I have tried different tactics to overcome this. I am s l o w l y reading one now, but I don’t gravitate toward it (not the one pictured, but it’s one I really want to read if I can ever get there).

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

@eyrea I don’t think it’s a matter of looking for “100,000 word plus” (or any random number), but rather the enjoyment of a continued storyline, the idea that something isn’t going to end quickly or abruptly. I guess I like to settle in with a story.

@kimlockhartga I was hoping you’d chime in, because I know you enjoy short stories. Interesting thoughts about reading short stories done well vs. the latter, about “getting to the good one.” Several yrs ago my old book club chose the short story collection, A Good Man is Hard to Find, by Flannery O’Connor. This wasn’t the collection of her stories in its entirety, but just a few. To me, AGMIHTF was the standout. However, because I know she is a great writer, when I came across a collection in its entirety, I bought it—because it may need another go, or maybe there are more stories I will enjoy in that. I’m rambling, but that’s my take, I guess. Maybe I’m a snob and will be too critical of short stories, I don’t know. PS. I like beets, but rarely eat them. Meatloaf is a hard pass because I don’t understand the point of it. I know it can be mixed with different ingredients, but the bottom line, is that it was a loaf of sorts in the package from the store, then you cook it as a loaf. Just seems like zero ingenuity, why mix it with stuff just to turn it back into a loaf??

@bookstodon I just reviewed AFTER ANNIE, by Anna Quindlen. It's quite the heart-tugging story. The author does a great job with characters, setting, and narrative. This was my first time reading this author, and it will not be my last. Full review (shorter than usual, for me, anyway, because I didn't want to give away any plot points or twists, of which there are many.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Quindlen is a great writer. While I haven’t read this one, I’ve read a few others. Every Last One is a book of hers that left me a bit stunned. Very intense is my only word of caution.

Breathe. It’s the weekend.

JCO has long been a favorite of mine. I’ve read a few of her books, but she has a ton, so I’ll probably never get to them all. She writes literary fiction, that usually runs a bit (or a lot) on the darker side. Her books tell stories of ordinary people in ordinary lives, & she’s so good at it. She has written many short story collections if that’s more your style, check those out. Breathe is one of her newer books that I’ve yet to read. Currently she is 85 & is still teaching at several universities. #photography #books #fiction #fediverse

Since I've talked a lot about change today, I'll ask a question about it:

If you've changed something in your life or about yourself, how did you do it, and why?

Likewise,
@Likewise@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr I think I’ve mentioned before (but can’t remember what the question was!), but I changed what I eat. Basically low to zero sugar. I changed for a few reasons. 1. No way of eating will tell you sugar is good for you. 2. A friend was also changing to this way of eating and it seemed easy (it really has been). 3. I could tell that eating well and exercising as I age only gets harder, especially if you make changes later in the game. It’s been almost 7 yrs and I’ve learned a lot. Just because I don’t eat certain things doesn’t mean I don’t like them and that’s ok. While there are certain foods I miss (& it wouldn’t be the end of the world to have one of these things now and then), the avoidance of them for the most part is just easier (for me)than having ‘cheat’ days. Plus, with the cost of food continuing to rise (going out or eating at home), what I can make is almost always better. Food is a comfort, but choose wisely.

Cover girls.

I love discovering different-covered book editions. I had no idea the flowered cover of Lisey’s Story by Stephen King existed until I happened upon it recently. In fact, I didn’t know what book it even was because the title is not on the front & this is not a dust cover. The edition I have owned for years is the one on the right with the shovel.

Book art is sometimes just a little bit magical.

One of the more known covers of Lisey’s Story by Stephen King that features a shovel on the cover. Also pictured is Lars (snake), who is wrapped around the handle of a shovel.

First draft complete.

This is a story about the year my dad, who had Alzheimer’s, lived with us. It has been 6 yrs in the making, with a huge gap where I did not write at all. Even though there’s still a lot of work to be done, getting to this point feels like an accomplishment of some sort. Small steps.

A smidge shy of 19, but she has some claws.

I struggle with short stories, & I don’t know why. I’m about halfway through this slim collection & I will say they are s t r a n g e , so I’d definitely recommend, b/c I like strange & creepy stories. I’ve yet to read her debut, Tender is the Flesh, but based on this one, I’d like to. #Mondog #photography #fediverse #amreading @bookstodon

We’ve talked about not finishing books, which I have no problem doing. There are some books, that I know I will give another shot at some point. This is one such book. I’m thinking I stopped b/c something else grabbed my attention or was more pressing (ie. library book, etc-which is actually a poor excuse b/c I always have library books in).

  1. Has anyone read this?
  2. Do you have a book you DNF, but came back to later on?
