Bermuda, near Long Bay Beach. Another rare black and white.

DUMBO, Brooklyn. Old one and I’m not sure if this building has changed! At the time, this scaffolding looked like it would support a tent.

No more old stuff tonight! Industry City is basically a commercial mall with maker/hipster branding, but I love these painted steps.

I found Daniel Danger through @pluralistic who I will apprehensively tag for credit.

I wrote some words about why I love this work, but then deleted them since there’s no need to over-egg the pudding as my father says. 🍳

Go buy prints from this guy. He’s incredible.

Unprocessed photo, taken in southern Quebec. We were extremely fortunate that (a) my house was smack in the middle of the line of totality, and (b) the sky was perfectly clear throughout the event.

Now, with 9x bracketing, I have a mere 639 photos to evaluate, process and merge. But what an experience! Awesome, really.

Here in Indianapolis, we had a totality around 3pm EST. The bird chatter was deafening all afternoon around the feeders, but once totality hit, it was dead silent (not one peep) until the sun came back. And the temperature dropped about 10 degrees.

Here we are approaching totality.
We are almost at totality here. You can just see a thin ring of sun. It was still sunny, but the sunlight was very weak.

Cabbage patch. The photograph is from Longwood Gardens. They have a section where they plant vegetables for people to observe gardening in action. I fell in love with the sage green and purple leaves of the plants.

Caught sunrise in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia just as the sun peeked over the horizon. Used the tree for a perfect frame. A reminder to appreciate the world's quiet beauty.

Eclipse

This time I was lucky, and the preparation paid off. And I did not even have to leave the house for taking this photograph of the eclipse. I just had to open the window, set up the camera, et voilà.

The preparation started last year in October:

"Bouquet of Flowers," Maria van Oosterwijck, second half of the 17th century.

Van Oosterwijck (1630-1693) was a Dutch painter of still lifes, mostly florals. She was quite a success, and a canny businesswoman, marketing her works to various crowned heads of Europe. She was a professional painter at a time when few women were, but she was still denied membership in the Painter's Guild because of her sex.

By all accounts, she was a deeply religious woman, and many of her paintings include symbols, either through color or other means, of her religious views. Butterflies were to mean the Resurrection, for instance.

She never married, but dedicated herself to her painting. She raised her nephew, and taught one of her servants to paint and be an artist herself, so she could be self-supporting. I like that aspect of her; not only being independent and self-determined, but helping others to be so as well, even if she was denied some opportunities because of the prejudices of the time.

From a private collection.

My favorite picture I took today of the eclipse. It was such an incredible experience and worth all the traffic to get to that small park beside a lake near a mountain.

Nature is flamboyant in a way that is not overpowering or offensive, but rather, joyous and inclusive.

"Come see me!" she invites. "Step out into my landscapes and enjoy the season with me -- beauty is so much more satisfying when it is shared."

The earth. It's an amazing place that we have all been invited, as guests, to share in and benefit from.
