Each individual OFDM subcarrier is modulated with a Quadrature amplitude modulation signal. The advantage of this is that each individual carrier sends data at a relatively slow rate and the aggregate data rate is the sum of all the subcarriers. QAM uses two carriers 90 degrees out of phase. The amplitude of each carrier determines the resultant vector of the modulated wave to create a data bit. For example; the sum of the carriers equals +45 degrees at 25% amplitude a 1101 data bit is sent.

Why is it necessary to preface this with the word "liberal"?

The descriptor isn't needed. Do better.

CSNET was developed on Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) VAX-11 systems using BSD Unix, but it grew to support a variety of hardware and operating system platforms.

The Computer Science Network (CSNET) was a computer network that began operation in 1981 in the United States. Its purpose was to extend networking benefits, for computer science departments at academic and research institutions that could not be directly connected to ARPANET, due to funding or authorization limitations.

I used to run RA BBS (Remote Access BBS)
GoldEd (Mail Editor)

Do you remember ZMH? Zone Mail Hour?

I wonder why this was never scaled to work with ham radio. Why can’t we make this work using HF for backhaul?

The whole idea of using TCP for everything ruins the feel.

"Aliens" found in Peru are actually dolls made of bones, forensic experts declare.

Aliens have not been discovered in South America after all. The doll-like figures, photos of which went viral online last year, are just that – dolls, according to scientists.

The controversial artifacts were seized by Peruvian customs agents in October and intended for "a Mexican citizen," the Associated Press reported.

HopelessDemigod,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

Experts with Peru's prosecutor's office analyzed the seized dolls, and forensic archaeologist Flavio Estrada presented the results of their findings at a press conference for the Peruvian Ministry of Culture on Friday.

"They are not extraterrestrials, they are not intraterrestrials, they are not a new species, they are not hybrids, they are none of those things that this group of pseudo-scientists who for six years have been presenting with these elements," Estrada said.

AT&T is sending out letters warning they want to kill virtually all landlines (and perhaps related data circuits where fiber is unavailable) across essentially their entire coverage area throughout California. This would have devastating effects. Related CPUC meetings will be taking place through March.

Landlines provide crucial services for individuals, businesses, and other organizations in a wide variety of situations -- not just emergencies when cellular and Internet service tends to rapidly fail, but also for vast numbers of people in areas with poor, unreliable, or in many cases (even in large sections of major cities!) NO cell service, NO fiber, etc.

Landlines often provide the only available communication in a wide variety of security and safety situations, from elevators to interior spaces of all sorts where cell service simply doesn't work.

Many disabled and other persons have crucial equipment that depends on landlines. Often they are not tech-savvy and do not have friends or relatives to help them through forced technology changes.

AT&T has been shirking its public safety responsibilities for years, while still leveraging their effective monopoly on services in so many areas.

Their new effort must be stopped. I'll have much more to say about this as the situation progresses.

Background

FCC order 19-72 ended regulations and began permitting telecom services to cease their copper landlines. Since its effect in August 2022, most telecom providers have switched to VoIP-based landlines.

Night number three of sleeping with the window open. Tomorrow I’m purchasing mothballs for the basement. I suspect a skunk is hiding down there and I won’t have it. Bright lights, music, and mothballs. More aggressive options are on the table such as having a professional use a live trap to remove the critter.

Prior to World War Two, one of the few countries to have a public broadcast television service was Britain. The BBC broadcast John Logie Baird's 30-line TV pictures on medium wave between 1929 and 1935. In November 1936 they upgraded to transmissions on 45 MHz

For my ham radio friends.

A gentleman in Cambridge Minnesota ran a 6 meter SSB net this evening on 50.200

With his large 6 meter (50 - 54 MHz) beam he could work 100 miles in all directions as he swung the antenna around. It was good to hear all of this local traffic.

The net starts at 7:30 central time on Tuesday nights. Perhaps people in other states could try making contacts next week.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said today that it infiltrated the world’s second most prolific ransomware gang, a Russia-based criminal group known as ALPHV and BlackCat. The FBI said it seized the gang’s darknet website, and released a decryption tool that hundreds of victim companies can use to recover systems. Meanwhile, BlackCat responded by briefly “unseizing” its darknet site with a message promising 90 percent commissions for affiliates who continue to work with the crime group, and open season on everything from hospitals to nuclear power plants.
