I've stopped boosting images that lack alt text. Even ones that I love!
I live in Nova Scotia, with my husband, border collie and three Cornish Rex cats. I seem to spend 90% of my waking time in the kitchen, cooking and the rest out walking my dog.
I do not post or comment on anything political.
I write stories and take pictures. They are on my blog mostly.

Shocking news this past week. I play cards online with friends every week or two. I was supposed to play Thursday night but was too sick. The group found a sub and played for two hours, and after the game, one of my friends found his spouse had died. Apparently, it was due to complications from a recent surgery, but her death was very unexpected. His wife was a lovely, smart, very nice woman. She leaves behind two adult children. A reminder to appreciate those around you.

EllieK,

@augieray
That is hard, when it's so sudden.
Condolences to your friend.

I usually ride my age in km on my birthday but did not have time today. On my ride this morning I stopped by the beach to spend time with Anthony whom we had seen every Summer for many years. He always had a smile and something cheerful to say. We were born the same year.

EllieK,

@harold
So sad, but what a lovely memorial in such a beautiful place.
Have a good day, Harold.

EllieK,

@harold
I remember it well. We had been here barely a year.
Very sad.

EllieK,

@harold
My library (Halifax) doesn’t have it. Shame. I would have liked to read it.

EllieK,

@harold
Wow, that would be amazing, Harold.
Have you read any of Louise Penny's books?

EllieK,

@harold
Ask her if she knows of Marylyn Plessner. Many poems attributed to the mad poet Ruth in those books were written by her, including the well-known line "Who hurt you once, so long ago...?"

EllieK,

@harold
The poet I am speaking of (Ruth) is a fictional character in Louise Penny's books.

EllieK,

@harold
My mother wrote most of her lines. (Some also by Margaret Atwood)

Pax tuckered herself out today on her first birthday. She had a blast!

Good night/good day to all our super Mastodon friends!

EllieK,

@GertrudeZane
Goodnight, dear friends!

One of those can't do anything days, cold outside, still damp, some flurries, and I've been out, or I wouldn't have bothered to dress. I think I might have a hot shower and crawl in bed and hope I wake up for the evening news.
(I've been quite sick recently, I need rest)

Once I shut down my PC, I'm not online much. I'll probably pop back at some ungodly hour, slept out

EllieK,

@Rasta
I didn't know you've been sick. Nothing serious, I hope. Feel better soon.

Cool new risk assessment tool. Called ARIA (Airborne Risk Indoor Assessment), it comes from . (Look, they say it's airborne--finally.) 😆
It asks for LOTS of info (date, nation and city, Enter temp, humidity, dimensions of room, occupancy, duration, assumed number of attendees infected, if you've been vaccinated, etc.) and provides an estimate of risk:

https://partnersplatform.who.int/tools/aria/calculator

EllieK,

@augieray
And?

EllieK,

@augieray
It was, "and your decision was? "
Feel better soon.

Of course, it's not only covid making the rounds, as you've discovered and reminded us.

There is a cat sanctuary on YouTube called Furball Farms Cat Sanctuary, and we are just loving watching it. They are in Minnesota and broadcast every day. Imagine, if you will, over 300 cats in a gigantic building with an equally huge catio. Hardly any fighting, maybe just a sibling smack every now and then. They have beds and posts and special shelves with blankets everywhere. Sleeping in groups, playing, grooming each other. I’ve never seen over 300 cats, not in cages, just hangin out. It’s so damn peaceful.

EllieK, (edited )

@rolandelli
This is wonderful alms I will be looking for that YouTube channel!
How is that wheel not in constant use? (Ours practically is, and we only have 3 cats!)
Also, how do they all get along so well and peacefully (at least in these photos)?

EllieK,

@rolandelli
Thank you! I've found them on Twitch

Pax is fast asleep. She can't wait until tomorrow because it's going to be a special day!

Good night (or good day) to all of you.

EllieK,

@GertrudeZane
Goodnight dear Pax! Sweet dreams!

EllieK,

@GertrudeZane
Doesn't time fly with our little sweethearts!
Hope you have a lovely day!

Edit: So reason has prevailed, and we will not be getting another.
Our ages (74 and 67), potential compatibility issues with current incumbents, and costs have all factored into the decision.
Thanks!
The mother of one of our cats (Zaz) is due to have another litter next week.This is what's going on in my mind.
We have 3 Cornish Rex Cats already:
Badger who is 9, we got as a retired breeder, then aged 6
Pangolin, also retired breeder is about 4
Zaz will be 2 next week.

Well, I think that most people who voted are avid cat fans, and I had to take into account this bias. However my own bias could not be discounted in the same way. Therefore, I am still leaning toward the opinion of the majority.
I had to check with the cat minder if we ever go away (answer: she's good with 4 cats, having 4 herself) and now I have to take a long cool look at finances. And logistics. Do we have enough room? So, in short, I don't know yet.

Technical Cat Question

Edit: I have decided, as we have no guests, to store it in the guestroom cupboard, which has 2 doors!
Zaz has become obsessed with chewing my exercise mat, even rolled up. She finds wherever I hide it, no matter where I put it. If I can reach it, so can she, only more easily. I don't have a cupboard with a door (if I did she would work out how to open it or scratch the door to pieces to try to get in).
Help!

EllieK,

@aetataureate
Thanks!

EllieK,

@danmccullough
That should work!

EllieK,
EllieK,

@cesstra
That video? That's it, exactly!

Great idea... but

  1. Who's to say she won't like the new one just as much?
  2. One of the commenters said her cat had to have an operation as it had swallowed some, so it could be dangerous.
  3. I have no room to store 2 mats! One was challenging enough.
EllieK,

@yingtai
Thanks. 😊
Be careful. Hopefully, she's not ingesting any! I don't know about you, but our excellent vets don't work for free!

EllieK,

@NorCalWineLady
Thank you!

Day 5 of the worst cold I can recall. Just tested negative for COVID for the third time in 96 hours. I'd been confident I could travel safely while wearing masks & avoiding crowds when possible. This illness has destroyed that confidence. I still hope to travel, but this may change decisions I make about flying, using group ground transportation, & timing trips for warmer weather. I wish sick people learned to stay home or wear masks, but getting each other ill is what we do now, apparently.

EllieK,

@augieray
I'm glad to hear you're feeling better, though slowly but sorry about your acquaintances.
