#WritersCoffeeClub 6/3: Should books include a content warning?

I'm divided about this.

I do not think that trigger warnings actually help much.

On the other hand, readers should know about certain tropes that happen in a book, so they can avoid it if they do not like those.

I suppose it's up to each author, and I would certainly not want to impose them.

There's already too much book banning going on. (And lets not even talk about erotica and how they are handled.)

#WritersCoffeeClub 10. Good sources for publishing info?

The Alliance of Independent Authors is fantastic for self-pub authors. They do a lot for their author members including producing super detailed guides. Their watchdog is a great tool for checking if publishing services are trustworthy. I check it before working with small publishers! I'll add the link because my main complaint is how much of a nightmare their website is.

#WritersCoffeeClub 17. What genres would you be terrible at writing?

Steamy romance. I'm certain it'd be clunky and awkward.
Historical. It'd take me two lifetimes to craft an interesting plot, and then make it historically accurate, and then make it interesting, and then make it historically accur... (This is a genre that I enjoy reading! And editing! But writing? I'm in awe.)

3. Do you use semicolons? Correctly?

Yes to both of these questions. I'm also more likely to encourage them inn edits for clients than I am to take them out. The idea that they're too complicated is a bit silly.

I've joined a reading challange on The Story Graph, that is a list of SFF sub genres.

There is no dead line, just read something in on e of the many sub genres and add it to the appropriate prompt.

This has prompted me to learn about the sub genres and how they may apply to the SFF books I read.

I'm not pedantic about it and I know one book can belong to more than one category and/or be difficult to pigeonhole.

I've recently read, The Saint of Bright Doors. I placed it under Mythic Fantasy, but also thought of placing it under urban Fantasy.

If you've read it, what do you think? Which prompt is more suitable for it?

#WritersCoffeeClub Nov 3. Are dialogue tags flexible?

Flexible in that I don't think writers need to stick rigidly to just "said". But rigid in that I think writers should not be flexible with what words make sense. You can shout a word. You cannot shrug a word. Shrugged would be an action beat. I recommend Amy J Schneider's 'The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction' (even if you write/edit in Br Eng) as a fantastic resource for learning what rules are flexible and what are rigid.

#WritersCoffeeClub 21 How do you write internal dialogue/telepathy?

I've not actually written either. The closest I've gotten to internal dialogue is very close third-person narration. If I did, internal dialogue would be set in italics. Telepathy would need to be in speech marks because it is still direct speech. I'd need to think about what italics for telepathy would add to the readers experience. 1/2

A great way to add depth to your writing is to craft short stories exploring different characters and elements of your work. Not with a view to info-dump everything you learn. But so that you can have characters and narration reference little details. You readers don't need to explicitly know every little detail of your world building to appreciate that it is there. #WritingTips #AmWriting #WritingCommunity

Pattern Wool&Honey
Yarn some organic 100% wool

I enjoyed finally finishing the yoke, and separating the sleeves was a first for me, but not very spectacular haha.

Now on to just stockinette stitch for forever. I think I will not finish this soon, but keep this as my project to take to work, easy enough for when I'm teaching...

(Which means I can start some new project!!!!)
