Hello Fediverse! We are a small urban farm growing super-hots and other tasty peppers in Tuscaloosa, Alabama since 2019. We will mainly be posting about our garden but also pepper profiles for the ~50 varieties we grow and pictures of Big Aubs the pepper guard cat. During grow season, come see us at the Tuscaloosa River Market!
Looking forward to seeing more of the pepper community on Mastodon and connecting with other growers!
#introduction Hi, I’m new here, but I’m giving this Mastodon thing a try! I’m an ecologist by training, currently teaching intro bio to undergrads. I’m an #insect enthusiast with particular love for #bees, #wasps and other garden critters. I have a chaotic good #vegetablegarden and plant lots of #nativeplants for the yard critters. I’m also a #twinmom and #vegetarian#cook. Don’t have a #dog yet but I love to see photos of your #dogs. What are you #reading right now?
I’ve only (“only”) got a dozen #tomato plants this year, but they are producing. This is my breakfast portion, because if I don’t eat them at every meal we’ll be overrun. #gardening#VegetableGarden
I made a gravity powered drip irrigation thing for the garden! Already had the bucket and aquarium tubing laying around. Why didn't I think of this last month when everything was dried out and dying??
It takes almost 2 days to empty the 5 gallons. Amazingly, the slow drip seems to do a better job keeping things watered. A daily blast from the garden hose was totally drying out within hours in the extreme heat we've had.
#Gardening tip. 30% strength vinegar is a dandy weed killer. Home Depot used to sell it in gallon jugs - not sure if they still do. Last time we ordered a 4-pack online.
Use it full strength. We spot spray using a “chemical resistant” spray bottle. If you use it on weeds in your lawn it will also kill the grass but the grass will grow back. Works fast and just a bit of spray will zap a weed. #Gardens#FoodGardeners#VegetableGarden
