I haven't used Times New Roman since 2008. But, type nerd that I am, I still ended up doing a semi-deep dive into the typefaces I recommend you use instead.
Join us Tuesday, April 2 for a free online lecture, Type Revival for Period Film & TV with Leah Spencer. She will offer a look into this unique intersection of traditional craft and contemporary tools. See her process as used in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” to reproduce original mid-century type and lettering as digital fonts.
I have been in a typography class for 3 months. It's more intense than I thought it would be (I thought it was going to be 'how to pick typefaces' but it's 'how to design typefaces).
I stuck with it because I am interested in learning something I don't know anything about. Today I got my grade: C+.
My perfectionist self says, 'why C+?'
My kinder, compassionate self (who is thrilled that I got to do something I never thought I would), says, "yay! you designed a typeface!!"

Typeface is only the type of the font face.
Monospace has fixed width types and so on, it's the #typography ruleset on each type.
#Typography Tip Tuesday! There are some basic terms for the anatomy of type that it can be useful to know, especially when analysing type during the typeface-choosing process, such as the shape of the serifs on typeface A versus typeface B. Here’s a very quick overview of type anatomy using Latin lowercase (more in the uppercase example, coming next week), set in Bricolage Grotesque — a free variable font by @mathieuloutre.
It is hard to compare sans-serif #fonts and declare a clear winner for on-screen readability, 2024 edition—feat. "Inter" (I heard some people raving about here recently, so that got me curious) vs "Cantarell" vs "Liberation Sans" vs "Droid Sans".
#Typography experts may be able to identify the 5th font hidden in there.
It is not Comic Sans MS.
As part of my forthcoming Patterns Day talk I decided to rebuild the newly redesigned Creative Boom article page using Utopian fluid typography to replace its multitude of breakpoints. This is the story of why and how.
#Typography tip: You probably know common ligatures (top, left) and discretionary ligatures (top, middle), but did you know that type designers are free to make as many ligatures as they like, and out of whichever characters they like?
Changing, by PintassilgoPrints, has loads of ligatures, and using them makes our type appear more like lettering, because the standard letterforms are not repeated as frequently — compare the two versions of the “checking account” example.
