The same article reports that public universities in Florida are having trouble hiring professors. "During [recruitment] conversations, 'more and more often, we are hearing, "Florida? Not Florida. Not now. Not yet," because they are looking at regulations' like this one, as well as bills passed and proposed by the Florida Legislature."
"In #Florida, some candidates’ concerns are so profound that they’re turning down job offers in the state — despite not having other offers….In #Texas…applications for open [faculty] jobs are down 17% from last year, despite ramped-up efforts to reach out directly to promising candidates."

I mentioned to my PhD chat group buddies that it’d be lovely to see them on Mastodon, and some have agreed to give it a go.
So I’m asking for help. In advance of them arriving, I’d love to be able to point them at this post and replies to find their connections. Are you doing a #phd too? What’s it about? Have you just finished one and have some advice?
[edit: mine's about getting kids interested in data science at school]
Could you help me find as many PhD researchers as possible?

I recently graduated from the Uni of Strathclyde where I studied #politics and IR. I was a full-time #student officer for 2 years, including as the President of the Students’ Union in 2021/22. It was a wild six years! 👨🏻🎓
I voted Yes in 2014, aged 16, and I would vote Yes again in a heartbeat. 🏴
Hey blahaj.zone! This is my #introduction post, both to this instance, but also in general for social media :p
I'm a #linux user (Debian 12 for now), who is a #student of Social Care
with an interest in #linguistics. I do very rarely actually make my projects open source, and I'm sure I'll rant about them on here.
My name is (unknown), and I'm a #student at the University of NC at Chapel Hill. I'm a physicist (well, not exactly but soon🫠) and a music producer. My field of study is #theoretical#Physics and #quantum mechanics, although I'm still learning QM. I'm also interested in #philosophy#climate science, and physics. I'm obsessed with The Expanse, science fiction, and #mars. I've been diagnosed with severe #ADHD and #anxiety.
This post was accepted by the high council itself. #introduction

Do not ever let yourself be downtrodden by people in power (especially old, cis, white men), who do not want to understand. Do not allow them to gaslight you and steel your joy. Defending what is right so rarely comes easily, and unfortunately, it rarely does what it must in order to succeed. But you can wake up tomorrow, satisfied that you did what you had to do. There will always be people ready, willing and happy to tare you down in order to protect their power. Don't let them.
I have had a problem with a lecturer for one of my courses from the first month he taught me. I defended what was right. In a long email, I layed out the issues, and all the potential solutions I saw to a problematic situation. I was diplomatic. I was fair. I was willing to make a change in a productive, peaceful and safe way. All I got for my efforts was a long, unproductive and distressing phone call, followed by an unenlightening email.
What does this mean? It means that he destroyed any kind of paper trail I may have wanted to create. He gaslit me so effectively that I am scared to approach anyone above him in the chain of authority, for fear of the exact same treatment. Educators need to be held responsible for making students learn in an unproductive and discouraging environment, but it doesn't help to hold them responsible if they are unwilling to take accountability.
I admit that I am not a perfect student. Neither is anyone. But I care about doing well, performing up to the standards I set for myself and getting this degree. I care about fostering an environment for the students who come after me, in which they feel safe and confident to raise the issues they experience, without fear of the reception my complaint just got. I waited for months to send this email. Anyone who has heard me complain about this specific lecturer knows that this has been a long time coming for me.
At the end of my email, I showed an ounce of vulnerability, saying that it saddened me that I felt unable to raise this issue until now. He misused my humanness, my willingness to be approached and to start a discussion to make me feel like I had done wrong here.
I feel tricked. My words have been twisted. Every example I gave has been thrown back at me, or conveniently forgotten, or dismissed out of hand, or glossed over. This is not the kind of education I signed up for. This is not the kind of learning environment I ever wanted to experience, never mind watch other people experience. This is not what any student, ever, should have to go through. my story is not unique. My experience is consistent across multiple scenarios, painted by multiple people, from multiple backgrounds and cultures. Something needs to change. Something needed to change ages ago.
