In the EU, iOS will soon allow multiple browser engines. Is this the end of Safari's dominance on iOS? Will it fall into obscurity? Will it eventually be discontinued? Will the tables be turned as Safari becomes a Chromium browser? That would be ironic.
So as part of the Reddit AMA, I got questions about which browser I would use if I did not use @Vivaldi. The point is that the reason for building Vivaldi in the first place, after already having built Opera, was that there was no browser like Vivaldi out there!
What other browsers have:
Single key keyboard shortcuts.
Mouse gestures.
Work spaces, tab stacks and tab tiles.
Web panels.
Quick commands.
Custom themes, including custom buttons.
Mail client, calendar and feed reader.
This is just to name a few items and for me those things are not optional.
Similarly I would not like to use a browser that does user profiling, including locally, and crypto. I would also not like to use a browser from a company that is also an ad company. These things are for me not negotiable.
Finally taking the time to set up Safari Profiles properly and bind certain websites like YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook to open in an ‘Undesirables' profile that I don't use for anything else. This feels like a better setup. #Apple#Safari#privacy
Apple opens up browsers in iOS 17.4, displays default web browser prompt.
People have been wanting #Apple to open up, but I see a future where #Chrome being the top browser on #iOS. Or, put another way, #Safari marketshare given to Chrome. In a future where Firefox and other browsers' marketshare likely even smaller than today.
Yes, this is EU for now.
I favor the choice but I have a gut feeling I know what most (non-techies) will choose. 🤔
There is some saying this all will have Apple make #Safari "more competitive" which would also make the App Store better.
I think Safari has been doing pretty good with CSS improvements in the past few years. Not sure if Safari competition is going to change anything in my scenario. Which i'm confident i'll be wrong about on some level. I'm sure Apple will find some ways to fight to keep Safari a first and best class citizen. As an iPhone user i'm meh. As a web developer, i'm kinda meh.
A mixed blessing. Open is good but I fear it's the beginning of the end for websites supporting #Safari, and I love to use Safari. To me its only flaw is lack of uBlock Origin support. https://mastodon.social/@threkk/111818836430469746
Apple will allow the use of full versions of different browsers on iOS, not just as a 'frontend' for Safari.
This is great news because I like Safari (thanks, @lisamelton and @jensimmons !) but I believe having the option of choice is always an advantage for everyone. In the past, I've had rendering issues on some websites with Safari (Mobile), making it impossible to use those sites.
So the Safari bug with a container type on the HTML element also prevents changes in webtools from updating the page. That makes the bug a bit more serious. :(
Maybe I should check if the bug has been filed.
If you've been a Apple nerd podcast listener for 15 years like me, this episode of Upgrade is fantastic.
It's like that episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air where George and Louise from the Jeffersons and Arnold and Mr. Drummond from Diff'rent Strokes showed up.
My phone is glitching so I’m truly using my iPad for the first time ever. I need to say that it isn’t fantastic.very inconsistent experiences between apps and other apps. And #safari! Omg it sucks! Especially with #pwa apps, but generally quite poor compared to anything chromium based.
I really wanted to give Safari a chance and I really, really tried. I totally dig their "cloud tabs" feature. But I never had more issues with non-working or glitching websites in my life. The plugin and extension system feels horribly clunky.
And do not reply and try to convert me to use "Firefox" please. I tried it, its not for me.
If you ever thought “I wish I could control my browsers using Shortcuts”, you might be in luck! 😉 It's still a work in progress but I think it's quite solid already.
