This and the preptual Hunter Biden thing is just this election cycle's "BENGHAZI!!!" hearings maneuver. And of course the MSM will fall for it hook line and sinker and let the Republicans drive coverage and framing just like the "but her emails" bullshit in 2016 while giving Trump's insanity a pass. Pathetic. #rant #uspoli #msm

Logic, it's hard!

  1. Why do people deliberately stop talking, or making sounds in general, when you, a #blind person, walk towards them? People, make your regular sounds. Sounds are helpful.
  2. Why do people shout in your face just as you're reaching an obstacle, thus distracting the hell out of you? Even worse, combined with 1, it can be a jump-scare. Really not helpful! This latter case has just happened to me, and I nearly dropped my groceries.

What kind of stuff was I posting on twenty years ago? On a whim, I went back and paged through the February 2004 posts. They're pretty fluffy, for the most part, but I found half a dozen posts still worth mentioning. I think I'll do a little thread.

Violet Blue (@violetblue) had a #blowjob #howto book out and was getting bad reviews (WTF?) from pissed-off religionists on Amazon. Her epic #rant was memorable and worth excerpting:

Pour déterminer si une année est bissextile, le calcul est simple :
Année divisible par 400, ou bien année non divisible par 100 et année divisible par 4.

L’algo, c’est juste ça.
En js vanilla, avec un return en plus, ça tient sur 72 octets.

Pas besoin d’une pu**** de lib npm de 2,5 ko et qui nécessite nodejs 12 !

C’est presque au même niveau que les libs : est-un nombre pair.

JS : return (n % 2 ==0);
Pas besoin d’une lib pour ça ? Et bien si, il FAUT !

I understand the argument of "private members shouldn't be tested ideally", but how about you deferring this decision to the developer? There are definitely proper use cases for that. 😬

We need to reduce the growth in our energy usage and convert ever more of it to carbon neutral sources to avert climate change, which was already going to be nearly impossibly hard for people to agree to. So Silicon Valley and VC firms decided we needed to waste 2% of it doing nothing useful with crypto (and growing) and increasingly comparable and only marginally more useful (and growing even faster levels) with AI. hankg, to bluesky

The people behind Bluesky/Threads/Post/anything besides ActivityPub/Diaspora protocol federated social web, financially and otherwise, are the exact same people that gave us the calamity of modern social media and tried the exact same market monopoly move with web3/crypto (which I despise for other reasons but that’s a segue). They even sold the latter with the same decentralization and egalitarianism marketing shtick. I’ll be damned if I trust my social media presence to them again. To quote The Wire: “Fuck me once, shame on you. Fuck me twice, shame on me.”

hankg, to rant

It seems clear to me that the tech press, even those friendly to decentralization, are only interested in Threads, Bluesky, and whatever new idea some other VC fund or billionaire come up with. Mastodon and AP are mentioned in passing if at all. That's unfortunate. It's not just a chasing the money thing because it's the likes of people who have proven not to succumb to that, I'm not naming names. We on the D* and AP side of the fediverse, or social web as I have heard people call it recently, can still go about our business improving things incrementally and doing what we've always done. If another wave comes and we catch it fine. The tech press and pundits, even fediverse friendly ones, have sadly moved on. Ironically most of the articles I see on why they like Bluesky more than Mastodon, the rest of the fediverse doesn't get recognized at all ever and never has by these same people again except maybe in passing, are reasons why I haven't liked my Bluesky experience (which I've thankfully integrated into the Friendica part of the fediverse I reside in thanks to its bridge). But anyway...back to incremental improvement and growth and doing our own thing with the "normies" not considering us a valid option for the time being again. #rant #fediverse #bluesky #mastodon #friendica

I don't know if this is an unpopular #programming opinion: I hate the syntax of the new operator. It isn't too bad, if its just variable = new T(), but as soon as you need to use it with other stuff it sucks. new Vector().dot(new Vector())
That new Vector() is a unit with a whitespace feels so wrong to me. I would love it to be Vector.new().
In a similar way, C-style casts like (float) i / (float) don't feel like they should bind the way they do. float(i) feels so much more natural to me #rant

So, a TV (already LED but not quite "Smart") has ability to disable the screen so you can hear audio from TV station while not watching it and don't wear the screen down (and pay for wasted power). Great. But... There's NO WAY to disable the screen when playing media off USB. That option is there but it's "unavailable".

My use case? Listen to some hour-long podcast from USB stick while laying on my couch. Impossible on this TV because some braindead management/development decision.

I’m fine with app stores charging a skim. The level of skim right now is outrageous. 5% seems a good level, maybe up to 10% if there is heavier required infrastructure. Market forces won’t fix this but government regulators can. While they are at is they should go after Visa, MasterCard, etc for their outrageous 2-3% skim fees. As we all go paperless for payments they are essentially infrastructure now. So they should have profit margins more appropriate for that position not the >50% even after outrageous salaries, largesse, etc #rant

I know I am in the minority of this, and the only people that will reply are the ones that agree with me, but the term "zeroday" aka "0day" applies to an exploitable bug that has been publicly known about for exactly zero days. If there is a known flaw in that the attack has been reversed engineered and the info has been made public, not a 0day. If a patch exists, not a 0day. No this isn't major, but I find it irritating when I hear it. I guess as an old schooler, I remember when 0days had value particularly if you were trading them with your hacker friends in some dark corner of the Internet, and if admins or the vendor knew about it, it had diminished value, and that influences my thinking.

One other point, that's a number at the beginning of the term 0day, not a letter, so don't pronounce it "oh day", show some respect and call it "zero day".

Day 2 of searching for a job

Man it's hard to get a coding job if you have never worked before it seems. I have nothing to show compared to others, despite being a good programmer myself. I think. I have worked on a bunch of technically impressive projects such as writing a DS game in rust, allocating the function stack in the heap, an algorithm that generates mazes, my very own shell and some others.

Despite all that, I have no experience with Bootstrap, Angular, Django or whatever so no job.

diegovsky,
@diegovsky@fosstodon.org avatar

It's a bit crushing to have spent all that time doing stuff that genuinely challenged me and made me a better programmer, but still not being considered anything less than a "junior".

I have even contributed to a bunch of open source projects and am actively doing research at my university, yet, I'm still not considered worthy of a job.

Bad takes to make people grumpy in the morning:

Material design was a terrible, horrible, awful mistake shoved down our throats by corporate managers who cared about changing things constantly to give the illusion of progress and keep their cushy paycheck.

While what they actually achieved was teaching a new generation of designers and devs that making hostile, unusable, slow, undiscoverable UIs was the Way Things Are Done.
