#CouchPeloton @chrispana9 picked up 39 points tonight (as did @cassana) to extend her lead in the #8NationsGiro. @ClintEssential also breaks the 400 point barrier with 420 to remain in 2nd and @LiaMirch is in 3rd.

@markrprior There’s something weird with the alt text, diverging numbers from the post, etc., so I’m not entirely sure if that reflects the true current standings. No rush though. Then again, I’m assuming you’re probably sleeping by now anyway. ;)

Have you ever heard of the qayroq? It's a simple #percussion #instrument from Uzbekistan consisting of a metal piece and a stone; often a set per hand, and the rhythms can get really complex.
This is Abbos Kosimov, possibly one of the most talented Uzbek percussionists, with a demonstration qayroq solo. When I met him, he let me try them and taught me how to move my hands. It was really tricky.

I think I’m about to give up on the internet, after years of finding dozens of pages that literally copy Wikipedia articles, minus sources/updates (in other words, utterly useless), plus now I’ve come across a few YouTube videos where people are copying the exact same rubbish information as “bigger accounts”, using the same words and format. Hey, let’s re-record their transcript!
Holy hell, people, ummm, human AI imitators. Welcome to the echo information age!

#CouchPeloton Last call on #8NationsGiro Here are the picks so far...

cassana,
@cassana@the-crossroads-inn.com avatar

@markrprior I saw the thread you did some hours ago, which worked. Obviously if the Couch Peloton games become more popular the alt text char limit might become an issue more often than not. Threading could be a solution, though it’s of course not as all-in-one-place-ish. Still, thanks for keeping up on providing some way to get picks and points in an accessible format.

@markrprior I swear I sent mine yesterday, but having seen no acknowledgement through your usual favoriting of those posts, I checked. Apparently it fell into a black hole. So the quick version then: Brown, Labous, Lippert, Longo Borghini, Niewiadoma, Reusser, Vos
Gracias, Mark.

When I was studying I learned about the theory of semantic memory - how people will remember the meaning of something better than raw facts.

This is certainly true for me. I can remember long strings of numbers if I have time to give them a context. And this must be what mnemonics and memory palaces do: give data a semantic structure and context to help us remember it.

@elsemusic I was listening to quite a complex discussion on this half an hour ago. Nobody really seems to have the answer, beyond, AI is a thing and it’ll stick around, especially in getting royalty-free sound design for TV, podcasts, etc., which will ruin that part of the industry. It’s quite depressing really; that’s an area I was looking into for a while.

Sometimes I really hate YouTube titles, like this recent one by Rick Beato: "The Father Of All Music - Why not listening to Bach is a mistake".
I mean, where do I even begin besides mentioning the obvious eurocentrism and implied notion that music wasn't really "music" before Bach? And for the record, I quite like some Bach from time to time.
There are so many influential people and works that shaped music around the world, from the makers of palaeolithic bone flutes to modern innovators.

Having a look at the IQAir World Air Quality Report for 2023. Only 7 countries in the world scored below the limit value for safe levels of particulate matter: Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, Mauritius and Aotearoa/New Zealand. Asia, particularly cities in South Asia (Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan) are at the bottom of the chart, with yearly averages up to 23 times the limit value. #AirQuality #Environment #Pollution #Health

It seems this weekend my music making endeavours revolve around this #Instrument. This is my custom "modern" Jeli ngoni (also n'goni, koni, xalam, etc.), which differs a little from the traditional one in that it has a larger bowl-shaped body, wooden bridge, neck-through design, geared tuners and CNC'ed neck, compared to the traditional long-oval-shaped body, spike-lute (i.e. partial-through-neck) design, calabash bridge, leather ring tuners and dowel neck.

@ekknappenberger 🤣 From a Ukrainian lute-zither, to a mandolin-type instrument (generally "banduria" is Spanish though), to the American banjo (originally a black instrument). Yeah, that lineage really lines up based on cultural contact, etc. 🙄 NOT!
Everyone I've ever talked to this about goes: West African lutes like the jeli ngoni, Caribbean (Haiti banza and other gourd instruments), American gourd, and later wooden-rim banjos. There's just no doubts about that migration.

cassana,
@cassana@the-crossroads-inn.com avatar

@ekknappenberger BTW, Ibn Batuta wrote about the jeli ngoni around 1352, well before any Portuguese explorers reached West Africa, let alone Ukrainian kobzari (who were usually blind, and sadly got executed by the Soviets in 1935, and the instrument was changed to play classical music) having a ballad battle with Portuguese troubadours or something. But hey, perhaps there was some time travelling quantum stuff going on that nobody specialised in this subject can fathom.

Awesome! More #Archaeology goodness from Turkey: 12000 years ago people wore piercings in ears and lips.
"The combination of contextual and physical anthropological evidence at Boncuklu Tarla confirms, for the first time, that personal ornamentation using body perforation was practised early in the #Neolithic period and typological comparison of ornaments between sites shows that these practices were widespread as early as the PPNA."

🤣 Some crazy time travel stuff in this quote! Earliest swords, approx. 3300BC.
"The oldest image of a star pattern, the constellation of Orion, has been recognised on a piece of mammoth tusk some 32,500 years old. The constellation Orion is symbolized by a man standing with his right arm raised and a sword at his belt and can be seen throughout the world at different times of the year."
The one thing #archaeology agrees on is that it's a depiction of a man. We simply don't know more. #Prehistory

#Journalism appreciation this morning here. Yep, it can happen.
Nu.nl, a Dutch news site, ran an article a few days back on half of Dutch people in their 20s being overweight based on BMI. Sigh! I, and many, commented that it’s an inaccurate measuring tool.
Today they published an article explaining why BMI doesn't work for a large group of people by interviewing doctors/nutritionists. They talked about waist measurement, but not waist-to-height ratio, which is better than static numbers IMHO.

Logic, it's hard!

  1. Why do people deliberately stop talking, or making sounds in general, when you, a #blind person, walk towards them? People, make your regular sounds. Sounds are helpful.
  2. Why do people shout in your face just as you're reaching an obstacle, thus distracting the hell out of you? Even worse, combined with 1, it can be a jump-scare. Really not helpful! This latter case has just happened to me, and I nearly dropped my groceries.
    I don't often #Rant #Grumble, but sometimes… 😖

Fun day: Visiting my hometown Rottweil today. Its famous Fasnet (carnival) has a long tradition, it appears first in the 14th century. Today I'm just a spectator,but I'm thinking about marching down the street next year in such an elaborate costume, as I did until a few years ago
