The first patient to receive a spinal implant to treat advanced Parkinson’s disease has described experiencing “a rebirth” after the treatment allowed him to walk again without falling over.
Marc, 63, from Bordeaux, France, was diagnosed with the degenerative disease more than 20 years ago and had developed severe mobility problems, including balance impairments and freezing of gait. After receiving the implant, which aims to restore normal signalling to the leg muscles from the spine, he has been able to walk more normally and regained his independence.
#Parkinson’s disease is caused by the progressive loss of #dopamine-producing neurons. For about 90% of patients with advanced illness, this leads to difficulties with #walking, including balance deficits and freezing of gait. Conventional treatments, such as the drug #Levodopa, can improve symptoms but are unable to completely restore normal movement.
I'm glad I found this inspirational interview with Richard Lewis on the /DAPSociety FB page. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's in the middle of a flurry of surgeries he needed for sciatica and several falls. In this interview, he talks about the need for facing life's challenges with acceptance, humility, and a sprinkling of spirituality. He also talks about the importance of connection. Definitely worth a listen, even if you don't have PD. https://www.brainandlife.org/podcast/comedian-richard-lewis-on-living-with-parkinsons-disease#Parkinson#Life#Inspiration

Today is my wife's birthday. It's pretty much just us.
She was surprised when I told her she needed to go to the bakery and pick up her birthday cake I secretly ordered her.
I don't eat due to my feeding tube so she wasnt really expecting one.
I would have baked her one, but with my #parkinson's it was better to secretly order one and send her to get it than make a cake that would require her to clean up a mess on her birthday.
