J+5

Artemis private beta rollouts have begun!

Hi there, the Artemis private beta rollout has just started! @hariette will be emailing 50 signup sheet users, while @lilkev will be adding 50 users from Artemis Discord. The order will be based on the submissions to the private beta signup form, as well as general activity within the Artemis community....

OC A UI idea on how to merge boosting with up/downvote buttons into one unified voting system in a visual way

Artemis might use a swipe gesture to visually hint at the relation between upvoting and boosting, as shown in the main animation. Here's a static app mockup with both swipe levels displayed. I'd also imagine that there should be a setting that auto-upvotes posts when boosting.

🆕 blog! “Using disposable phone numbers for better security”

Last night I received a call from my bank. They'd detected an unusual transaction and wanted to make sure that it was legitimate. Had I recently purchased £10,000 worth of crypto in the Maldives? What?!!? No! ARGH! I started to panic. All my apes money gone! No. Wait. The other thing. I kn…

Did you receive our text? 📱💬

You can, even when you're abroad, thanks to roaming.

According to the latest Eurobarometer survey, more than 81% of EU travellers are enjoying the freedom of calling, texting, and using without extra charges when exploring the EU and EEA countries.

The Roaming rules have been in place since June 2017 and got extended last year until 2032.

Here's a little telephony mystery for you - can you find out how much your phone provider charges for 056 calls?

i have a #mobile #android #reversing question.

lets say i have an apk.
i want to fetch all the dns names in it that are being used for API calls.

Are there tools that make that easy, or are we still talking about 'decompile the apk and manually go through all the code by hand'?

🆕 blog! “Can this device make a phone call?”

I want to detect if a web browser is running on a device which is capable of placing a telephone call. Is that possible? I'm going to go with a cautious "no - not quite". Although there are several proxies which get you part of the way there. Here's a link to a telephone number […]

I would love to start developing for smartphones, creating a proper client totally reimagined for the smartphone is long overdue and a project I could really sink my teeth into. You know the popup keyboard on your phone? You think Steve Jobs invented that? No he didnt, Richard Stallman did, it's called a minibuffer. Emacs was doing all this stuff in the 80s, and way better, even.

But I can't help but hate all the frameworks surrounding mobile development, ie React Native, Swift, Flutter etc, but also from my experience as a user, the apps I've tried that were made with alternative frameworks like , which had to downsample and skew the resolution to fit my phone's screen, so it didn't seem to even feature responsive design; maybe ok for the hospital software they designed it for but not something for creating applications that the people will use out of their own volition.

I'm pessimistic that "there is no alternative" but seeing how nicely is coming along, I'm hoping that I may be wrong. Is there anything promising out there in the space?

Any #mobile #network engineers here who can let me know if it's possible to block a working mobile number across all networks?

My daughter's phone number stopped accepting incoming calls ("You've dialled an incorrect number") in August and ID.Mobile are unable to fix it. Outgoing calls and data work fine.

Wondering if it's been blacklisted for some reason.

🆕 blog! “Your phone is probably a CDO”

I'm not sure how many people know this, but I thought I'd share something I learned a few years ago when I worked for a mobile phone seller. Most modern smartphones are too expensive for people to purchase outright. At the most extreme end, the iPhone 14 Pro Max costs £1,2001. So a typical customer […]

Throughout two days we had some hacking, lightning talks, workshops and BoFs!

Saturday morning I had the pleasure of welcoming around 5 people (at 10:00 in the morning!)
