New M4 iPads have more cores and are likely higher performing than my Ryzen 7 5800U based laptop and yet still can be used for development. Even a simple task like editing, building, and deploying my SSG (Zola) based website can't be done without the help of a remote machine running a real operating system. When will Apple focus on the iPad operating system instead of the hardware? #Apple#iPad
My 2018 #iPad Pro was such a great purchase. Five and a half years later the A12x, 4GB, 4G are still perfectly fine for iOS. I am mildly tempted by the new pencil, purple tint option of the new Air, and the screen of the new Pro, but none of that would change how I use an iPad, how much I use it or what I use it for. Let's see if the next iOS changes that.
It’s just that I’m sick of them never living up to what they could be, because iPadOS is balls.
The new Pro has an M4 chip, giving it even more ability to watch Netflix. And yeah, you can edit movies in Final Cut, but you’ll need to leave the app in the foreground when exporting, or it’ll drop out of memory and fail.
That’s the unbridled power of #Apple’s M-series chips in an #iPad.
The new iPads are once again mind-blowingly amazing hardware showcases, hamstrung by software and an extractive App Store gatekeeper that limits what users can effectively do.
There is now such a large overlap of prices between iPad and MacBooks that we’ll probably never see a touchscreen Mac, because it would be a superior choice over iPad in most cases.
What I want, really, is macOS running on desktop, laptop, and tablet form factors, with a relatively open software environment not solely owned by the App Store.
I think Microsoft actually got it right with Windows 11 (minus the #enshittification ads). If only they pushed more strongly on the Surface lineup…
New #ipad looks great but we’ll need to wait for #WWDC before we get to the “why”. A skinner iPad with a nice screen is great, but still doesn’t turn the iPad from an overpowered movie streaming device into something worth the cost.
I’m curious if we get that amazing virtualization tech on iPadOS with a legal way to run macOS. That could really transform the iPad from niche to go-to travel device.
Can’t help but notice some anemic comparisons in the #iPad announcement:
M2 “nearly 50% faster” than M1
M4 “50% faster CPU” than M2
The M1/M2 are no slouch, but sounds like #AppleSilicon CPU performance is plateauing. If the new iPads are not compatible with old ($$$) keyboards, that could further dampen the urge to upgrade.
Based on what I’m reading about #Apple’s newest #iPad, I guess I bought my last one. I’m glad I juiced up the processor so it will last a while longer. I use it every day for social media, reading longer content, shopping, and travel planning.
What I wish Apple had is a Magic Keyboard that works as a folio. That way I could use a Pencil to write on a flat surface, and still have the ability to use a keyboard.
iPad Pro users. "We want something closer to, or just, MacOS”
Apple. "Look we made it thinner.”
Us. "Ok, but a more powerful desktop class or hybrid OS would be great. Scaled up iOS isn't really very Pro.”
Apple. "But... thinner. Games are even better on this one.”
I really do wonder what the breakdown of iPad Pro users is. How many buy one just to or mostly play games?
How many are doing movie production?
How many want something that's laptop power, but more portable?
Every iPad hardware announcement is a deep breath and then several months later at WWDC when software is announced that deep breath is used to blow a raspberry.
Will this be the year that it's used to say "Ta-da!" and show us something that makes use of all that power?
After months of rumors, Apple has announced its new iPad line-up, which includes the first iPad Pro with an OLED display.
This major screen upgrade should deliver 1,600 nits of peak brightness for HDR content, and is joined by a “fresh design, more powerful internals, and a thinner profile than ever before.” Here’s more from @theverge.
Instead of making the already-too-thin iPad Pro thinner they should have added more battery capacity. People rave about the battery life of iPads , but if you use processor intensive applications they don’t last all day. Far from it. From the very beginning I used my iPad Pro plugged in, because it didn’t last a days painting.
