It's spring, so it's a great time to post some garden pictures. This image was taken at Heritage Gardens several years ago. There were so many butterflies around!
My good deed for the day - I rescued this beautiful little Holly Blue from a watery end this evening.
Think it’s a female but hard to tell with wet wings.
Found her upside down in a puddle on the Comber Road surrounded by cherry blossom (like a scene from “Melancholia”).
Picked her up and carried her to the nearest bush that was still in sunlight. It was hawthorn but there was ivy higher up.
Hope she survives the night 🤞🏻🦋
Zum #insektensamstag gibts heute Abend noch einen Tigerpassionsblumenfalter vom gestrigen Besuch im kleinen, aber feinen Schmetterlingshaus im Maximilianpark in Hamm 🦋
It’s #spring and the #flowers are blooming, which means that #Bees have got a good supply of food. They particularly seem to like the small flowers of the #Cotoneaster plant in the front #garden and throughout a #SunnyDay, there are always several dozen on it.
"The higher overall (but variable) #nocturnal activity in #insect communities underscores the need to address threats such as light pollution and climate warming that may disproportionately impact nocturnal insects."
I’ve not seen any #monarch#butterflies so far this spring but they’ve obviously been here. Spotted these two monarch #caterpillars yesterday on the one milkweed in my front #garden, a survivor that has regrown after dying back to the soil following our big winter freeze. Hope these make it to adulthood, the ones I saw last year disappeared before pupating.
Behind the scenes at work in the Living Collections area there is an insect retirement home. This guy is way older than their normal lifespan so he doesn’t have to be “on display” anymore. His house is the cushiest beetle pad I’ve ever seen though. #Insect#beetle#animal#entomology 🪲
I was not prepared for how cute Hummingbird (Sphinx) Moths are.
She was sunning on the door, came back out to her in a deathmatch with a Towhee, so drove the bird off, got her into my hand, got her some heat then into cover, etc.
(she hadn't lost any bits, looked like I got there before injuries)
Adding 2 new #SnapPea varieties to our #FoodGardens this year. Royal snap(deep burgundy) & honey snap(pale yellow) - both are edible raw or cooked. I have 6 of each in my starter pots & transplanting them into beds today.
My delayed #SaanichOrganics seeds vid will be up later today 👩🌾
