The other night the kid and I e-biked home from a late theater rehearsal via a cross-town #greenway in #Carrboro and #ChapelHill. It was a clear enough night that she was picking out constellations as I pedaled.
We also saw 3 deer and an owl. More greenways, please!
Background is that the NIMBY's who live along Hawthorne came out in force to oppose this greenway. It was approved anyway, but they appealed to our new mayor. She decided to continue with the project, and this is a meeting with her where she explains why. Several city councilmembers are there too.
She goes over why it's not expensive, and how it's a foundational greenway.
My #MLKDayOfService was helping to clean up the North Fork of Peachtree Creek along the #PeachtreeCreekGreenway We had a great crew as you can see. Hell's Front Porch season has evidently been extended in #ChapelHillNC.
It was beyond hot out today, but being able to #bike to pick my kid up from school on a shady #greenway instead of alongside several hundred heat-producing cars at least made it bearable.
a few more shots from my walk through the woods. part of the trail connects to the #greenway, which isn't maybe a footpath per se, but i think it's at least adjacent! still very peaceful. a few cyclist passed by, but otherwise very quiet.

I confess though that I took the #greenway home. Gleeful as it is cruising passed gridlocked cars, it's also really hot. The heat coming off of those personal fossil fuel power stations is intense.
My expertise is in #sustainable#transportation. My partner's is sustainable #forestry. Our knowledge bases don't overlap often, but they do when it comes to understanding the benefits of converting an erosion-prone, hard-pack dirt road to a stable, paved #greenway that will connect key destinations.
The car #traffic that came into view as I crested a hill on my morning commute was a sharp contrast to the surroundings of the pleasant #greenway I had been on.
#Cars--and the way we bend over backwards to cater to them--really do ruin everything.
There's a quarter-mile stretch of #greenway on our route to #school that lets us momentarily forget to worry about the multi-ton high speed metal boxes that threaten our lives every day.
A moment of bliss in an otherwise screwed up world.
There's a fringe group in #ChapelHillNC & #CarrboroNC that opposes literally any sort of man-made change. And they'll happily take whatever shape they need to recruit good people to their side. The latest effort involves fighting a greenway. Because climate change.
