This article about a nursing home discharging Steven Block, a person with #dementia who then becomes homeless, is unbearably sad. It is an accompaniment to the #WashingtonPost's very good (and devastating) piece on the deplorable state of #assistedliving communities (even the ones with chandeliers). The #care, or lack thereof, for our #elders is a #shanda.
My family are #WarSurvivors . My parents never knew what no war felt like until we came to Canada as war refugees - they lived through wars for their whole lives til we fled. I was conceived in a bomb shelter. Born while active shelling was happening.
No one really wants to flee only homes they ever knew with only basic supplies. As war survivors, we never wanted revenge. We wanted peace. We wanted safety to live simple daily life. As victims of violent war, we only wanted the violence to end.
Also - don't try to tell me what some armies do isn't fucking #genocidal & not comparable to Indigenous experience here. WTAF. Many Indigenous #elders here, in fucking high conflict #BritishColumbia where #Indigenous ppls have been fighting for longer than most of you have been alive have compared ongoing genocides to their own ongoing #genocides by #colonial govts. They can #recognize the similarities & #atrocities. I listen to offline elders - not ppl online.
I had my last regular day working at the #Adaptive Cycling Center, so how about a brief rundown on adaptive bikes!
I was hired to work for Outdoors for All in the ACC for May-Sept, and I'd like to document my crash course on working to get people with disabilities or injuries out and about on an #AdaptiveBike.
@fbaum The first handcycle we saw in Monterey County was in 2010 or 2011, when we met Ed biking on the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail's City of Monterey section.
As we noted in our perennials post (where he's among those featured) https://bikemonterey.org/perennials-biking-monterey-county.html, Ed's career expertise demanded many working hours at the computer. That made those hours with his handcycle a very desirable way to keep life in balance! :)
I went to an #ArtofHosting training a few months ago. Out of that emerged a question I want to pursue through conversations with my #community here in #Milwaukee, but also more broadly. That question is: What is the role we need #elders to play in our community now? The more personal question I'll be pursuing is what is my path to becoming an #elder? I welcome all input, questions, discussion and other interested in this journey.
THACKER PASS AND THE UGLY TRADITION OF EXTRACTION WITHOUT INDIGENOUS PERMISSION

Peehee mu'huh (or #ThackerPass, as it’s known in English), a sensitive wilderness area located in what is now called #HumboldtCounty, #Nevada, sits on the ancestral homelands of the #Paiute and #Shoshone peoples. Right now, these lands are threatened by a #lithium mining project being developed by a company called #LithiumNevada, a subsidiary of #LithiumAmericasCorp .
Our #NativeVoices just haven’t been heard, and that’s a big problem. The project has undergone several stages of permitting and regulatory processes before it can begin full-scale mining operations. These processes are essential to addressing environmental and societal impacts and complying with local regulations.
