Welcome to all the new users coming in from... #tumblr? Apparently?
Not a development that was on my bingo card for today, but #CEO drama is one of the main things #Fediverse is avoiding by being #decentralized, so... Enjoy the network!
Newer and still busted : completely #Decentralized social media that is completely unfiltered
Newer and also busted to some degree : decentralized social media with poorly filtered and discriminatory public blocklists
New Thotness : a legitimate focus on prioritizing manageable #moderation tools for instance operators instead of the current "here's a moderation hammer so treat everything like a basic ass nail" tools most generally in place
We have a suspicion that the high-mem nodes are those that subscribed to gossip for royalties. This testnet is aiming to probe that hypothesis by removing gossip royalties!
The aim here is largely to see if we have avoided such high memory nodes.
TIL: mastodon, and probably the rest of the fediverse, is banned on China.
Not surprising really, why would they want a hard to censure decentralized social?
But I haven't seen anyone talking about it.
Even thought there are thousands of chinese users, that obviously had to get the apk somewhere else.
@techhelpkb as long as I can't simply spin up my own instance and have it fully operational while blocking all interactions with the current main instance, #BlueSky is neither #decentralized nor #OpenSource
It's been almost a year of invite-only sign-ups for Bluesky, until now. The decentralized micro-blogging platform is now fully open to the public TechCrunch reports:
The solution to #Substack isn't to switch to another capitalist. The solution is to cajole all your software developer or tech savvy friends into making it super dead simple to self-host your own blog using #Ghost or any number of good-enough self-hosting blogging platforms.
OR
You can run an existing Fedi-compatible blogging suite for you and several (but < 50) of your friends — making sure at least two work in tech and have a vested interest in the site staying up.
Where to start 1) if you have a server that makes all the rules it's not a decentralized platform it's just people hosting servers for you with your rules.
This isn't better than #mastodon, and the veiled attempts to drag right supremacists using it's open source code to some how make #blueskys model seem better is disingenuous.
if Bluesky truly embraced #decentralized social media why wouldn't it help improve #activitypub and instead build their own?
I’ve been aware of this collaboration for years, but it is so cool that they are announcing successful experiments. The Interplanetary File System is no longer just a clever name. It can be used to send data to nodes on satellites in space. Next, the moon!
This looks interesting: Meshtastic is an open-source project for off-grid, decentralized, mesh networks built using low-power devices – https://meshtastic.org/docs/introduction
HowTo install your own ActivityPub instance for the Fediverse based on snac2 on your #FreeBSD system. Snac2 is a simple, minimalistic ActivityPub instance written in portable C.
This paper is really important, presenting empirical evidence of the imbrication bet. AI & the surveillance biz model. This is notable particularly given that most production surveillance tech is proprietary, its existence and use hidden from the public.
@Mer__edith Well, it is up to us, by boycotting businesses that produce, research, use, employ, support, sell or buy that tech as well as consequently only accepting tech and solutions that make it hard if not nearly-impossible to do these kinds of #MassSurveillance...
Good summation of the current weird, rewilding state of the web (and tech) from surprisingly, Rolling Stone (a little weird he calls it 'Dungeons and Dragons' rules for instances, but here we are). And it mentions @stefan too!
