What do you all think we do here in the ?

Is it “ ”? (It doesn’t sound quite right to me: I post “media” only rarely)

Is it “social ”? (Not sure, it’s different from offline networking, and I feel networked already even without the fediverse)

I’ve been playing with the term “social ”: I’m here to communicate with you all, but not 1-on-1, but socially, where everybody else can overhear what’s being said.

What to you think of the term?

‘Built with parts from eBay.’ Tri-Cities leaders rush to replace failing 911 system "The current system is virtually obsolete, with huge portions built with parts officials bought online off eBay and replacement pieces can no longer be found.... Earlier this year the Southeast Communications Center, or SECOMM, officials returned to leaders in Benton and Franklin counties, as well as Kennewick, Richland and Pasco, to stress that a full overhaul is needed." #911 #radio #communications #Kennewick #Richland #Pasco #WA

Of course I'm very concerned about all #blackout of #communications from #Gaza & inability for #journalists to report to public, from the ground. My bigger worries about this intentional communications blackout is that it affects all #HumanitarianAid organizing communications & all on the ground #emergency #rescue communications. Those are the most important communications ATM for all civilians & aid workers, trapped under constant siege bombardment.

With the governments wanting backdoors into our communications services, which in turn will allow hackers in, it is important to secure your communications. Personally, I prefer FOSS ones, not proprietary ones, so my choices are Signal (which needs your phone number) and Signal (which uses a long hash number). The latter is my preferred application, as easy to have on smartphone, computer, laptop and tablets.

Communications Outage (forwarded from FEMA Region 5) from earlier today, on the ATT telecom outage (which appears to now be restored):

"According to open source reporting AT&T is experiencing network outages across the United States. Customers are not able to send or receive phone calls (including texts) on AT&T network devices and the outage are also affecting FirstNet (AT&T) which is a network for first responders. All affected areas are not yet known at this time...."

We don't have basic cellular services to the end of Halifax, I'll believe this when I see it. 10 towers would make a difference at 1 million a tower or less.

The Province is taking action to make sure all Nova Scotians have access to cellular service, no matter where they live or travel.

Tip to people: If you want your announcement or press release shared widely, put the link to the online version into the email version. It's far easier for the email recipients to share a URL than to share the email text or attachment.

I'm still amazed how many comms teams don't get this basic point.

Strange “support” process from @signalapp

Within the app I sent some feedback and questions regarding their beta app and received an e-mail back which didn’t apply and didn’t address my enquiry. So I responded only to receive a message back that e-mail responses aren’t allowed and to start a new request through the app. This despite that their actual e-mail says to respond to the e-mail. Argh 😠 #communications #Signal #apps
