Tbh my biggest issue with #Affinity being bought out is that they're probably going to just move it into the browser. Working with any browser software is HELL imo.
So I managed to do a thing. I think Wine 9.0 must have introduced some big fixes because #Affinity Designer works now! With some tweaking, of course, but it's pretty cool to see nonetheless.
Designer v2 is still a no-go, relying very heavily on new Windows features that haven't been replicated yet in Wine; unfortunately, most of my files are now in v2 format so this isn't an ideal solution. Still, I can use v1 again, and that's better than nothing.
Timeline blowing up today with the news of #Canva puchasing #Affinity. Posts are pouring in, written in SO many languages. ALL of them worrying about yet another good software suite falling victim to #enshittification and a license model moving from perpetual to monthly subscription.
Users universally loathe subs and we have all seen this story play out before. Nobody trusting the "no changes planned at this time" message.
A sad state of affairs when we all now EXPECT to be worse off shortly.
I don't get why Canva spent hundreds of millions to get the entire #Affinity Suite. They could've just bought it for 120 bucks or so. No need to ruin it for everyone else 🙄🙄🙄

Just saw that #Canva bought #Affinity apps. Canva is entirely a subscription model. One of the big things about Affinity is that is is not a subscription model. The way the press release reads, it seems like Affinity will become a subscription model. You can count me out of that should it happen.
If #Serif#Affinity#software changes over to a #SoftwareAsService model in their next versions now that they’ve been purchased by #Canva, I’m dumping them —hard. I’ve seen this pattern too many times before to believe when a CEO says “nothing’s going to change” after a reputable company gets taken over in a buyout or merger. Part of me hopes this isn’t the herald of #enshitification come, but the rest of me has been trained over time to anticipate a future betrayal.

Aber die Zeiten mit extrem entspannten Einmal-Lizenzen bei Affinity dürften bald vorbei sein - lieber jetzt noch zuschlagen.

I've thought about waiting to see how bad it gets, but I don't really want to get any more invested in a product whose future and stewardship (i.e. pricing model) seems uncertain.
They are saying the #affinity apps will stay as a one time payment, and for the V2 apps that’s probably true. But you KNOW they are waiting to introduce subs with V3 at this point.
And they’ll say it’s because of some shitty AI implementation no one asked for.

I don't hate Canva. But they're a VC-backed subscription service with AI ambitions, which doesn't bode well for those of us who need affordable, non-shitty graphic design software.

Waking up to an email from Affinity today has put me in a miserable mood. They've been acquired by Canva.
I can't help feeling this software will go the way of subscriptions or enshitification as they blend the two together while adding in some AI for good measure 😔

Affinity has been bought by Canva, to compete with Adobe.
It was of course a matter of time before Affinity would outgrow its status of sympathetic small-scale Adobe alternative, and be sold for large proceeds.
Canva is into AI. Hopefully Affinity will get some useful AI-powered image processing tools, like upscalers and denoisers, but Canva will probably add generative shit and introduce subscriptions sooner or later.
@metin Dammit. I just read about the acquisition. I have the exact same concerns regarding the #Affinity suite - sooner or later it will become subscription-based software.
I am currently using Affinity Photo in v2 but might switch to #PixelmatorPro if they install a subscription model. If you are into #macOS, probably give it a go. Will also take a look at PhotoScape X, thanks for the recommendation. 👍🏼
