I save and backup all the photos on a Synology NAS instead of using one of the online providers. However Synology Photos doesn't have good search capabilities. So I built a project to search through the images using natural language captions, and found that it works really well....

Just a small tip of the hat to @synology for their work. We've had a few of their Disk Station NAS devices in production in our practice, and at client locations for many years, and they have proven to be extremely reliable. The software gets updated, and there have never been subscription fees for that. I've also got a 4 drive NAS of theirs in my home office, also serving as a Plex media server so I can watch a favourite (long cancelled) TV show or two, and it just works. Thanks #Synology.

Ich habe jahrelang auf WD geschworen, aber nachdem eine Platte nun nach gut 3 Jahren den Löffel abgibt, orientiert man sich ggf. neu.
Benötigt werden mind. 10TB (mehr ist besser) und die Platte(n) sollten ruhig sein, da NAS im Wohnzimmer steht.
Betrieben werden sie dann in einer #Synology. Irgendwelche Empfehlungen?
Taking your Apple TV to another country and running TailScale on it works like a dream. As far as the AppleTv apps are concerned, they’re still in Washington State.
Caveats.
I tried using the (wired) Apple TV at home as the exit node and performance was a bit fuzzy (on a 4K tv). I didn’t try again, I just changed my exit node to my Synology at home and it’s been crystal clear.
Once you’ve turned on the exit node, restart the Apple TV. Some apps may have already run and they don’t check their location after startup (I mean, why would they?).
For those who have a #Synology, the latest update to DSM modularizes Storage Manager into its own package. In the release notes for the new Storage Manager package: "1. S.M.A.R.T. attributes are no longer recorded or displayed." This doesn't affect Smartctl via SSH, SNMP, or scheduling of SMART tests from the UI. It is, however, yet another reason to just build your own custom server. Synology is slowly but surely trying to make things a closed ecosystem.

For any #Synology users. I want to back up my data to Backblaze B2 cloud. Hyperbackup is an accessibility mess, especially when choosing folders to back up. I've heard good things about Restic, but not sure how to set that up on Synology. Does anyone have any suggestions for something that works reliably and is accessible? Command line is ok.

I used Cloudfare tunnels to bypass the port forwarding issue, and to make the SSL certificates easier to deal with.
