For any #Synology users. I want to back up my data to Backblaze B2 cloud. Hyperbackup is an accessibility mess, especially when choosing folders to back up. I've heard good things about Restic, but not sure how to set that up on Synology. Does anyone have any suggestions for something that works reliably and is accessible? Command line is ok.

I went to check something on our and um.... 💩!

These drives are spinning platters that have served us well for almost 41,000 hours of use, so I can't really blame them for having a hard time.

Can any of you hardware geeks tell me how worried I should be? This is a configured as a Synology Hybrid Raid https://kb.synology.com/en-br/DSM/tutorial/What_is_Synology_Hybrid_RAID_SHR

I guess i've got some research to do today

EDIT: Replacement Drives ordered. Thanks for the feedback.

Have started getting email notifications that my home NAS is end of life. It's sat there dutifully doing NAS things for 10 years. So I suppose it may be time for an upgrade.
Are Synology still the go-to? Or should I look at some others? Use case is: >8TB storage (current disks will be considered EOL too), minimum 2 disks, 1gig ethernet ports, bonus for a 2.5, storage data is just files, not a lot of media, don't need fancy transcoding stuff, need backup to local USB and a cloud, and be able to do CCTV recording.
Not into a having a roaring old 2U server with FreeNAS.

After 4 attempts, I finally managed to migrate @homeassistant on a PI4 to the Synology.

The backup/restore works, the trick is to: Backup; Download backup;Disconnect the PI;Install VM in Syno;Change IP in HA to the PI one;Restore;Wait.

Followed this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8vOxg-SI74

My journey started a month ago. I moved all my all my containers and VM from my NAS to a testing MiniPC with Proxmox.

This test was very positive, so I decided to move to a new server. I'm using a cluster to move my LXCs and VMs. I'm very impressed by how simple the process is for a newbie like me. I just need to remove my snapshots before.

Keep learning in my journey! 😊

I am this || close to disabling #TimeMachine on my #Mac and just adding a second #Arq target for whatever this year's S3-a-like service is called on my #Synology.

May as well just do the latter anyways (assuming I have the space 🤔) and then I can at least find out if TM's incredible slowness is its fault or, somehow, the Synology’s.

Thinking I want to build my first personal home server. I have a #Synology #NAS DS220j but I'm thinking it's probably not adequate for Plex transcoding, among other tasks. I have a spare #Ryzen 2700x and 16GB DDR4, and also a 2060 Super (does a server benefit from a GPU?). Looking for any advice #fosstodon would be willing to share regarding hardware and software solutions.

I was chosen as beta tester for new #NAS hardware! This is gonna be exciting. Let's see if #Synology & #QNAP has a new competitor worth anything...

BTW: They're sending the unit, but no drives. Weird. You think they'd want to control the entire experience in a beta. Ya' know, so everyone is using the same brand, size, etc...

So, NextCloud was out. I started to take a hard look at Synology's tools. I was a little impressed.

  • Drive file streaming and/or syncing
  • gdocs like tools
  • Photos, already been using this.
  • Clients on windows, Mac, and Ubuntu

I didn't like that it needed a specific port exposed, but is what it is. Not sure how to get a working cert without quickconnect.to.

The Mini-Lab is complete!

4 Lenovo Thincentres with a Protectli box all in a cluster, and a NAS for all the files to be backed up to. Each box has 250gb SSDs so they can manage most of their own stuff, but the NAS helps for HA and backups. The NAS does a great job hosting my photos and media, and the other boxes do great at.... Everything else!

Catastrophic Raid5 loss at home. I had an array of 10 drives, 9 data + 1 parity lose 2 drives. It's a Synology SS1019+ with an external enclosure.

About 90TB in total, 90% full. Synology refuses to mount it. Drive errors galore in dmesg. I'm at a loss of what to do next.

I have a spare drive (all 12TB) just as a FYI, and am considering moving them all to a case I have with enough bays and to linux them into submission and try to recover something. But my MDADM foo is weak and the best I have is google right now.

I expect I'll spend most of today trying to recover a little before admitting defeat, RMA drives, and starting clean.

I'll admit I made many mistakes to get here. Only one drive parity, dumb. Not backing up when it told me, dumb. Not making sure everything I care about was in at least 2 places, dumb. And I had the gall to call myself "data paranoid"

Small update on my custom project; Last week I officially factory reset the and have put it up for sale. Such a good feeling to finally be getting rid of that thing.

Last week I also got the case I had been waiting on a restock for, and I have transplanted the NAS over. Some final (SATA power) cables are expected to come in today so I can install the drives I used to have in the Synology. We're getting there!

Solution in the thread!

My Setup to allow an external SSL access via is complete broken (and this without any change). Now I played around a lot and I have no clue anymore.

I followed the doc from here: https://www.smartlab.at/secure-your-home-assistant-with-https-using-synology-reverse-proxy/

If I use the right protocol and port, the reverse proxy port-switch from HTTP(S) to the local app is working, but I get all time a ngix 404 error. And it's only working with the local IP.

If I use the sub-domain, I get a host not found.

Part of my move to bring my source control in house using #gitlab (now on a shiny new #synology #nas) I've just seamlessly upgraded from 16.5.1 to 16.5.4 - but I'm confused why they offer three different versions;

"Today we are releasing versions 16.6.2, 16.5.4, 16.4.4 for GitLab Community Edition"

Now, I understand the versioning but why are they maintaining numerous minor releases, i.e. 16.x?

Can I move from 16.5.x to 16.6.x and what will I get if I do? It's a bit unclear to me!
