Happy birthday to #astrophysicist Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), trailblazer for women in #astronomy who discovered that hydrogen and helium are the most common elements in the universe.
Born England, she won a scholarship to Newnham College Cambridge in 1919 where she heard a lecture which changed her life. She wrote, “My world had been so shaken that I experienced something very like a nervous breakdown.” 🧵
In 2005 I was one of multiple artists who created hundreds of illustrations for Dougal Dixon's THE WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF DINOSAURS & PREHISTORIC CREATURES, published by Anness and Lorenz Book.
Part 4 of my Newfoundland Cambrian diorama build, from 2005. Building something this big and complicated then shipping it across the Atlantic was a daunting challenge – but it worked!

#WIPwednesday • A long wait at my GP’s yesterday meant I finished my autumnal mitosis #embroidery sampler except for signing. I’ll be writing a pattern for this one! #SciArt
(1/2) I bought a teeny tiny watercolor palette & filled it with 6 colors (CMYK + one extra color) from which I can create millions of colors! Here’s my palette in hand. You can read more on my latest blog post
I’ve taken my frog crab (Ranina ranina) linocut and made a repeat pattern. You can find it in the minouette Spoonflower shop, so you can get frog crab fabric, wallpaper and more. Plus I entered it in today’s challenge: Crustacean Core!
I captured the beauty of a green scarab beetle in watercolor in a coffee shop. These beetles symbolize renewal in Egyptian culture and play a key role in nature. I might create a small coloring card for kids who are curious but too shy to ask questions. Art should inspire curiosity! #sciart
Playing with inspiration from a fading flower. Turning my observation into an abstraction and then thinking abut how these patterns might fit into a diagram structure.
