#postmarketOS just landed the last MR needed to make the #libcamera + #PipeWire camera stack work on the #Librem5 and #PinePhone by default, using the new software ISP shipped in libcamera 0.3.
So if you have such a device: just update and go install apps like Snapshot, Warp, Decoder etc. You can even use it with Firefox and - very soon - Chromium.
Note that this does not replace #megapixels or #millipixels - those continue to be the default camera apps.
Note that with all of this in place, camera support on a lot of other devices is in close reach. For example the #OnePlus6 and #SHIFT6mq should only need kernel patches enabling the camera sensors. The softwareISP should then - at least in theory - "just work". Well, fingers crossed :)
P.S.: the one device where this already worked is the #PinePhonePro - but until recently it broke audio. That was also fixed in the process.
By now I've been home for a while, but last thoughts: Sort out call and random reboot issues, and the #pinephonepro is ready to use on the road. #gps and navigation with #osmin works well, the fully fledged firefox browser gets you around many "please use the app" moments, and even cameras work well enough on #pmos for quick snapshots to send to friends.
It works: A 3270km motorcycle trip solo with only #Linux in your pocket.

Let's rephrase that. I want a phone that belongs to me, and not to Google or Apple. So I'm daily driving the #PinephonePro with #MobileLinux (to be exact: #PostmarketOS with #SXMO).
(And thank you to all the great people behind @postmarketOS for their great work so far! Keep it up! And not just so my #potato becomes less taxing to use 😉 )
The good thing with people like @rmader constantly praising the work of @pipewire and @libcamera devs, is that you end up looking at upstream (or at least, actually submitted) kernel patches and make sure camera support for your device gets more future-proof.
In the end, it's very likely @mobian will soon ship a 6.4 kernel for the #PinePhonePro where (almost) all camera-related patches have been submitted upstream already :)
I've finally managed to install #postmarketos on my #pinephonepro that was lying in the draw since I got it in early 2022, my first impression about #sxmo is that it looks extremely interesting, of course, the learning curve might seem a bit steep, but it is definitely an innovative concept!
#SailfishOS on the @PINE64#Pinephone and #pinephonepro has an updated kernel and ofono. Please should if it breaks and i can revert the change, but hopefully its better!!
For those of you curious this is what the #pinephonepro camera looks like with my autofocus #libcamera and that new driver. This was late at night with only my room light on so it is still pretty noisy but it looks decent enough.
