I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like #Obsidian that are using open formats like #Markdown for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.
I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.
Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.
Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇
I really have to say that this is a really good tool once you switch from the #markdown default setting to the much better #orgmode syntax. 😉
I'll migrate the #Joplin data from my previous testrun over to logseq and go with that for the moment.
Don't worry, I'll probably never leave my Org setup. It's for another person's management and knowledge base where #Emacs was no option, unfortunately.
Anyone using a #zettelkasten tool like #obsidian, #joplin, #roamresearch etc) - do you really use the graph view and what does it help? How do you integrate it into your workflow?
I first thought I'd try it because I love mindmapping a lot, but I couldn't really make use of the graph so far.
However, due to my advanced #PIM processes, I rarely write things down on #paper.
I'd love to do so much more if there would be a great #FOSS solution for offline #handwriting#OCR. That would be a great investment by the #stationery industry! 🤔
It still offers better solutions compared to my #Boox#NoteAir#eink tablet.
I do write a lot about Personal Information Management (PIM) topics, I did some PIM research about local file management, I love to give lectures on PIM topics.
Therefore, it's quite natural that people start to believe that my personal PIM situation is near perfect.
I'd like to use a workflow where each #Mastodon message that gets bookmarked by me is automatically screenshotted to PNG, archived in a local directory and its text content + image descriptions get added to a text file (preferably #orgdown) together with a link to the screenshot and the original message URL.
I'm starting to question my preference for #Python for writing #PIM tools. 😔
After facing too much pain, I had to learn how to use #virtualenv a couple of years ago.
Now it seems that this is outdated & one potential candidate is #poetry which ought to work somehow with #NixOS which itself is not compatible to virtualenv.
I could not find any working setup.py->poetry tool yet. So it seems to be the case that I have to manually re-write ~50 meta-data files to yet another format. 😩
In case you might think that I've got my #PIM under control: 3 hours ago I had 791 items (from 2019 onward) in my #inbox. Those are ideas, tasks, notes, bookmarks I captured but didn't process yet. 😲
At the moment, I brought it down to 274 and I'll continue throwing things out tomorrow. 🏆
How does everyone store contact information? The full enchilada - birthdays, addresses, emails/chat services. any other info about friends, family, the people you love?
Am looking for something accessible on mobile and phone. text doc on a file-share service? Or perhaps a really nice bit of software for it? (Web. Linux and/or Android for preference)
How come that people are working with tools (and content) like #Confluence, #Jira, #Webbrowsers in general, #Word, ... and don't have external #monitors in portrait orientation? 🤔 🤷 #PIM
Need to blog about it from an #orgmode perspective.
If there is an actual reason not to use #Emacs - and you really should go for this golden standard - then Logseq using #orgdown syntax is a great alternative.
But still, you get the whole #PIM feature-set with Emacs only. That's for sure.
This spontaneous holiday project was the reason why I didn't work on most of the projects I actually planned for this week: re-arranging my #desk by rotating it 90 degrees and completely re-doing #cablemanagement with some longer cables. Had to put both speakers on desk.
Now, I'm much more flexible with my desk orientation.
Furthermore, it's now according to #ergonomic regulations with the window at the side and not behind monitors as before. 🤓
Today, I tested #Joplin because people kept arguing that you keep your #Markdown files as local copies which prevents vendor #lockin.
From what I've seen today, this is not a valid argument. The md files are named with random file names, their content is not just md, it's md + JSON for some meta-data.
From what it seems, without Joplin, you'll lose your structure and your internal and external links. This would be a desaster to migrate to a different tool like #orgmode.
