People using #Obsidian (and similar) don't even understand when I'm writing about #lockin situations.

If those services could be easily replaced by any Markdown edtor and a decent sync mechanism, why are they using those services in the first place? 🤷

I'm going to blog about that to make it more clearer.

@publicvoit the only lock per se is the wrapper of your markdown files. I see all the features and the “lock” that would imply.

You’re still free to use whatever you want. I don’t get why this would be a problem?

The features of obsidian is cool and all, but really not necessary for markdown to be a good format to take notes in.

@garshol Well, I disagree on all levels.

@publicvoit I made obsidian.el while actively using obsidian, and only used the mobile app.

@publicvoit emacs/org-mode is a great choice for many people.
Except your wife. :)

@billseitz Agreed.

@publicvoit basically: obsidian is the best editor for the context (imho)

Dorianix,
@Dorianix@graz.social avatar

@publicvoit well, the editor is smart and effortless to learn. The created files and directories are basic filesystem and markdown.

You can use your own editor and archive the same results If you want.
All of the topics obsidian solves could be done manually or by scripts.
Still obsidian is very useful for me.

I use sublime as an editor for everything else. And would fall back to it in case obsidian gets a problem.

I wonder why there are not more markdown editors with this approach.

@Dorianix No reason for Obsidian.

This can also be done by Logseq or even Emacs.

At least I'm not optimizing for learnability but for overall effort for decades.

Dorianix,
@Dorianix@graz.social avatar

@publicvoit everything 'can be done with emacs'.

.. and I have tried logseq,
it's is not there yet (for my usecase at least).

@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@Dorianix Cool, we need to talk. 😜

@publicvoit
I‘m using Obsidian because it does update links when I rename or move a file. How do you handle this with orgmode?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@username Well, as long as it's an agenda file, my ID properties are stable and I might move headings around as I please.

I never rename or remove my files. I guess your question indicates a totally different usage concept and those are the differences that would be inteeresting to discuss. But Mastodon is not good for that kind of discussions IMO.
