At #oaspa2023 , @petersuber outlines, in no particular order his 7 priorities for #OA: - Adopting OA policies & strengthening existing policies, particularly based on rights retention - Moving beyond APC business models - Growing diamond and repo based OA - Hosting OA research on Open Infrastructure & strengthening infrastructure where needed - Reforming research assessment to change incentives - Correcting longstanding & harmful misunderstandings about OA
In this article, #OA means #APC-based OA. The authors don't mention or consider green or diamond OA, which charge no APCs.
It's good to explore ways to make APCs more affordable. But it's myopic to do that without comparing them to well-established ways to deliver no-APC OA.
Please help correct those who assume that all OA is APC-based OA.
Interesting paper out this week that makes a compelling case the ocean and subsurface warming is driving #Antarctic#SeaIce decline. They suggest the Southern Ocean has shifted to a new state since 2016.
I suspect this is not the end of the story, but it's very well written by Ariana Purich and Edward Dodderidge.
(And bless the authors for putting it #OA so I can read on my phone while waiting to collect kids) #OpenAccess
"Thus, paradoxically, although Sci-hub may seem to facilitate access to scientific knowledge, it negatively affects the #OA movement as a whole, by reducing the comparative advantage of OA publications in terms of visibility for researchers."
When an author uses a transformative agreement to publish #OA without themselves paying an APC, is it appropriate to say "The authors received no financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article"?
If not, what should they say in the funding/sponsorship section? #Scholcomm@academicchatter#medlibs
Seeking input from some of you #OpenAccess advocates. I published a chapter in a new #OA collection. Is there any reason to also request permission to place my chapter in the institutional repository at my university? I am in the habit of putting all my stuff in there. But is there a reason to "bother" if it is already an OA publication available online? What's the going thinking on this?
If #predatory#journals are very low in quality, dishonest, or both (my quick and dirty def), then the category covers both #subscription and #OA journals. Their defining condition is independent of their open/closed status.
To see this, it helps to point out non-OA examples now and then.
"Most of the articles…will remain available in #PMC and available for bulk distribution and reuse, and all citations will remain searchable in #PubMed; however, some publishers retained the right to remove their content and have requested to do so."

The completion of the DEAL contract with Elsevier was linked to reaching a participation quota, which was achieved, and the contract comes into force #OpenAccess#OA

There are already different lists around the web for uni policies taking different approaches to rights retention. This an attempt to capture them all.
Remember that OAD is a #crowdsourced#wiki and depends on the #OA community to keep it current and comprehensive.
1/ I'm seeing a definite shift from protesting high subscription prices at non-OA journals to protesting high #APCs, and APCs as such, at APC-based #OA journals.
On the one hand, this is a sign of progress. There's rising acceptance that #OpenAccess is the future and #subscriptions are the past. We're fine-tuning how to do the future and debating different forks in the road.
🎉 I am exited to learn that my article on command has found its way onto the popular articles list with the Scandinavian Journal of Military Studies. It great to know that it is read while I am working to finish the rest of the #PhD thesis. It’s free #OA / #OpenAccess here: https://sjms.nu/articles/10.31374/sjms.146#phdlife
The OS-APS STEMO enhancement project is working on a better support for complex formulae, tables and images. Another focus is on the accessible design of the produced publications and the provision of an OS-APS online reader based on JATS/BITS-XML. #software#OA#accessibility
