Did you know you can opt out of Apple’s Crowd-Sourced SSID Location Services now?
You have to rename your SSID to end with “_nomap”. To know more about this read Apple's “about privacy and Location Services in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS" document. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102515
There’s a phrase you may not be familiar with, “the Mac community.” Technology wise, I’m bilingual. Microsoft and Apple. Windows doesn’t have a community like “the Mac community.” There’s some well known PC folks, but it’s more people milling about as opposed to a true, close knit community. I know many people who knew Charles Edge, but I never met him. I do know that there is now a big, empty hole in the Mac community. Your energy, enthusiasm, and kindness will be missed Charles. #MacAdmins
The #MacAdmins world (and the world as a whole) lost a great person last week. Earlier today we all learned that Charles Edge (krypted.com) passed away on Friday.
The Philly Mac Admins send their heartfelt condolences to the community, his friends, and his family. ❤️💔
I was lucky enough to meet Charles Edge at MacSysAdmin in Göteborg last October. I had bought my copy of “Apple Device Management” with me for him to sign, and I was extremely nervous to approach him to ask him to sign it.
When I finally caught up to him, I realised there was nothing to be nervous about. He was kind, welcoming, and incredibly generous with his time. A real role model.
He will be sorely missed by the entire #MacAdmins community. RIP
In the beforetimes, #MacAdmins would solve problems collaboratively on Twitter (or IRC). Then the Mac Admins Slack came and took over that function. Twitter became a hellhole and the admin community there weakened greatly, some coming here. So now that Slack has been having issues for a few hours now and Slack’s status page is in denial, there’s no clear alternative forum to even discuss the Slack issue.
Wondering when the MacAdmins foundation is going to maybe put together a job fair or similar for all the people in the Apple IT community who have been getting laid off at a clip.
Seems to me with all their connections, this shouldn’t be hard.
I have a #shortcuts question, partly for #macadmins and specifically about Shortcuts on macOS: I built a shortcut, and part of it runs a teeny shell script. I want it to show me the output of the final command in a dialog, and all I can get it to show is "stdout." I'm doing xattr -l to verify the value I set with said teeny script. When I type it in iTerm it shows up fine. How can I make that show up in the dialog? Thanks in advance.
I spin up and delete multiple VMs every day for testing various things. UTM is an awesome macOS VM hypervisor, and I recently learned they have a command line interface.
Are there any iOS apps that work with a USB-C console cable on an iPhone 15 or iPad? Would be really handy to be able to use with a mobile device in a pinch. I already SSH from my phone using Prompt, but sometimes you need to connect to things that have lost network access or you don’t know their IP. #MacAdmin#MacAdmins#SysAdmin
Timely Apple updates must be in your supplier SLAs
For business, it is also important to ensure your suppliers are equally committed to the platforms you use. That means ensuring third-party suppliers don’t just update their software with Apple OS support months or weeks after release, but strive to keep step with Cupertino.
Shout-out to @tperfitt for DFU Blaster -- this was VERY useful for me just now. Anyone who wants an easy way to get a Mac into DFU Mode so you can restore the proper (read: latest) version of its OS instead of the version that came installed on it, this means. you don't have to do the whole touch 5 keys at once with correct timings bullshit. https://bitbucket.org/twocanoes/dfu-blaster-public/downloads/#Mac#MacAdmins#macOS
If you're trying to set a #macOS#Sonoma Software Update schedule via #DDM and wondering why it's silently not working, check if you're setting 'DisableSoftwareUpdateNotifications' to ‘true' in 'com.apple.appstore' because, well, that breaks it. #MacAdmins
Those who use DNS service discovery for AirPrint* probably know it’s been broken since at least iOS 17.0. Possibly recent versions of 16.x too. If this sounds familiar, be sure to check out the 17.2 beta. #MacAdmins
Think static DNS records that advertise CUPS queues
Support for pre and post install scripts has been added to IntuneAppUploader for unmanaged PKGs. Just add the key ”preinstall_script” and/or ”postinstall_script” and set your script as a base64 encoded string 🎉 #MSIntune#MacAdmins#MVPBuzz
Is there a way to programmatically (from a Swift app) search through Mail messages? I use Mail.app. I think I should be able to search with Spotlight. I want to identify certain messages, then archive a copy.
