"As protests against #Israel’s genocide in #Gaza, ethnic cleansing on the #WestBank, and apartheid repression within ’48 harden into a proliferation of encampments on US university campuses, still more have popped up across the globe—in Asia, Europe, Mexico and elsewhere."
Have recently got every into researching administrative records of past students. This was a fun post to do, where a member of the family of the student filled in some of the gaps that the administrative record masks
"Due to the open source nature of the Fediverse and the widespread digital competence in the scholarly community, there is ample potential for societies to take a central role in developing a new scholarly commons." #LSE#fediverse
From LSE Library: "Established in 15th century Newfoundland, Robert Newman & Co. imported European wine in exchange for fish and salt🍷🐟🧂
By the late 17th century the firm began a 300 year old tradition of sending shipments of port wine to mature in Newfoundland #EYATradition#ExploreYourArchive"
It's a great time to be an #oligarch! If you have accumulated a great fortune and wish to put whatever great crime lies behind it behind you, there is an army of fixers, lickspittles, thugs, reputation-launderers, procurers, henchmen, and other enablers who have turnkey solutions for laundering your reputation and keeping the unwashed from building a guillotine outside the gates of your compound.
Isabel cultivated a public facade of philanthropic giving and public spirited activism, serving as head of the Angolan #RedCross. She attended #Davos and spoke at the #LSE (she was also invited to #Oxford, but her invitation was subsequently rescinded).
First was an incredible slate of talks and panel on #data, #algorithms, and decisions at the #LSE with Erica Thompson, @DianeCoyle1859, and Stephanie Hare. There's so much here in each talk - how models and data are inherently imperfect, a whirlwind tour of philosophy to analyze technology, and more. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mcVN23wL3I (2/8) #AIEthics
I’m moving here from another Mastodon server that’s closing down, so I thought I’d introduce myself! I’m not big on social media, so I probably won’t post here often.
There's a lot of discussion about bias in terms of gender, race, ethnicity etc., but what do we actually mean by bias?
The notion of bias is often discussed informally, also in academic literature, leading to imprecise discussions and potentially to misguided policy recommendations, which may even have adverse effects.
Nature recently introduced new guidelines for studies engaging with questions of race, ethnicity or gender. Among others, it asks researchers to explain how they controlled for #confounding variables. We agree this is important, especially because we think #bias and #disparity should be understood in #causal terms. In this #LSE impact blog, @LudoWaltman and I discuss some of the challenges around this.
Really looking forward to participating in this #Anthropology and #Degrowth workshop at the #LSE, 5-6th June. The Roundtable at the end is open to everyone and you can register here!
(I will be talking about #RegenerativeAnthropology)
British households have paid £7bn (€8bn) since Brexit to cover the extra cost of trade barriers on food imports from the EU, according to researchers at the London School of Economics (LSE).
The university’s latest report estimating the impact of leaving the bloc on UK food prices found that trade barriers were consistently hampering imports, pushing up bills by an average £250 (€290).
First was an interesting panel on the state of global economic governance at #LSE with Abraham Newman, Stephanie Rickard, Jamie Martin, and @mpaulsen. I did feel like this talk mostly ignored the Global South, but it was still quite informative https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WofSDwOj2Nc&t=1s (2/11) #economics
Next was a great talk by Heejung Chung on why flexible working leads to more work and how we can change that reality at #LSE. This is a concise review of solid evidence of why flexible working isn't necessarily a panacea for poor working conditions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V9NK9JqJN4 (7/11) #HR#management#work
The founder of #ARM cites filing 4 a listing on #NYSE another instance of #Brexit disaster. The madness of erecting barriers against our #EU family means the depth of #LSE much reduced. Continues the Tory tech disaster, begun when #Thatcher didn't support #Plessey & #Ferranti.
